I found out today that Dune (the actual book from 1966) is available copyright-free from Archive dot org as an ePub / PDF for digital reading (https://archive.org/details/dune-saga-collection/Dune%20Saga%20Collection/Brian%20Herbert/House%20Atreides%20%28278%29/House%20Atreides%20-%20Brian%20Herbert/), and I naturally went on a hunt for the nicest cover to add it to Apple Books.

There’s a LOT of awesome Dune cover art! Here's a fantastic history on Dune art through the years: https://t.co/khptGz4Pbi

@sdw @RalphBassfeld The Bruce Pennington covers are my favourites. That was the cover that enticed me to pick it up in a Belfast book shop in the 1970s. And that changed my life. For the better.

There was a feature spread about Bruce Pennington in issue 9 of The Illustrator’s magazine. https://bookpalace.com/acatalog/info_ILLUSTRATORS09DIG.html

Two pages from the spread in picture attached.

@sdw What cover did you decide on?

@sdw For Dune Fans, there is also a great youtube Video that I can recommend. It‘s long one but hey… that‘s Dune

@sdw what? Why did I had this on my wishlist for Christmas?

@sdw I would very much doubt this is copyright free. Just because someone put it on there doesn't mean it doesn't have copyright (especially as it also has Brian Herbert's books and he is still alive...)

But a lot of archive.org works on the law of obscurity: is it really illegal if nobody cares about it?

@kyonshi @sdw This was my thought too... the copyright on Brian's stuff definitely hasn't expired because he's still alive... are there any #lawyers here that could clarify how the copyright works on the original six books?

@sdw today I acquired the books. It is a good day.
@sdw I have those Dune books on my Kindle! I've read all of them, too. 😊
@sdw Which did you end up going with?
