Polar Nights Aurora Workshop

2025 Research trip into the dark winter of Arctic Norway in search of incredible aurora locations. This is a one of a kind itinerary for photographers who want to spend two weeks chasing the northern lights with a special focus on locations that make for exceptional photography. We have a unique team and level of experience, with a flexible itinerary based out of Tromso in Arctic Norway.

This timelapse is from March 3rd, or technically March 4 because it was probably about 1am when it happened.

Was a big night in Tromso, and Senja, and most of the Arctic. Clear skies everywhere, and a KP5 aurora event. That's when the red shows up, far in the south. The camera sees it much more clearly than the human eye.

Next month I'll release a special video that tries to explain clearly and simply exactly how auroras happen, and why it's such a marvellous phenomenon.

They are indeed very very complex, but I feel that at last, after a decade of photographing them, that I have a better grasp on the science of it all.

Capturing their beauty in full still remains elusive however. This timelapse is just a glimpse of what transpired on the evening of March 3.

One more special capture from the night of March 3. In the early part of the evening we stood outside our cabin and shot the aurora as the clouds faded away.

This scene is taken shooting straight up overhead, with a 14mm lens. Even then, it wasn't wide enough to capture the full scene. Just a glimpse really!

@ewen Woah, that looks so great. Would love to see this with my own eyes one day.
