Why some replies in the thread are broken? @FediTips ? Eg this one was I replied to @flypapers but the original paper post is missing

Hmm... I'm not sure what's going on there as it's difficult to find the original post by flypapers.

Is it possible they deleted the original post? That would leave your reply orphaned as seen at that link.

@FediTips @flypapers I was guessing this. @jocelyn_etienne is this true?

It's still there: https://botsin.space/@flypapers/111336415484128157
Both of my other servers (scicomm and gougere) see it, but apparently not drosophila.social @giorgiogilestro ?

I have 3-month auto-deletion on those bots, but normally not if they were fav'ed or boosted, see below. @kofanchen you did both, so I guess it does work!

A possible feature request would be to not #autodelete posts that were replied to, I can't find such an option.

@jocelyn_etienne @giorgiogilestro @FediTips @flypapers thanks,
I just went back the post and my boost and fav was not there 🤔

@kofanchen @giorgiogilestro

I'd say it's a drosophila.social issue, since they're still listed on other servers:

I see, many thanks to check, it's possible, as that we had a couple of server downtime last year, I wonder if that would lose some fav and boost @giorgiogilestro ?
As a precaution I may try to reply with a doi

@kofanchen @jocelyn_etienne @giorgiogilestro @flypapers

Hmm... I'm not sure what is going on here in that case. If it's just this one event, it's possible this is just some freak rare bug?

If this happens again then might have to look at what is going on more closely?

@FediTips @jocelyn_etienne @flypapers yes, multiple incidents for me also missing boost and fav, looks like relating to my instance and have some details to @giorgiogilestro already 🙏

@jocelyn_etienne @kofanchen @FediTips @flypapers

Hi everyone, yes drosophila.social has an automatic 90 days deletion for posts coming from other servers. I had assume this should not break down the thread because it should be using some kind of universal referencing?

@giorgiogilestro @jocelyn_etienne @kofanchen @flypapers

The "content cache retention period" section is very powerful and can cause more effects than most admins expect. It potentially breaks threads permanently.

There's a thread about it here, worth reading the replies as they have technical details:

https://social.growyourown.services/@homegrown/111376516797327772

According to Eugen, the setting was only meant for announcement instances rather than general instances?

Attached: 1 image ⚠️ Warning to Mastodon Admins! Be REALLY careful about the Content Cache Retention Period setting. (If you're at all unsure, leave it blank!) If you fill in a number in that field, it will start deleting posts and boosts that have already federated to your server. Threads on your server may end up with huge chunks missing and make no sense, and it cannot be undone. That's why it has a brightly coloured warning, because it is so dangerous. Thanks, this explains what happened. I have to say it is extremely poorly thought out. First of all, it is ridiculous that this is still called a cache while
clearly it's not a cache. And secondly, if the consequences are so severe one should add a proper warning not just have the box of a different colour.

I see there is an issue open https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/27733

I will use the cmdline to purge from now on.
