Darrin West@flexghost I love that voting in Australia is compulsory. You’re a citizen. You have certain responsibilities. If it becomes compulsory, any legislation that impedes that (see often see in the US) is likely to be illegal. In the US you are compelled to serve on juries. But not to vote. So punishing fellow citizens is higher priority than choosing representatives. Hmm.
WeaselThe purpose of a jury is not to punish fellow citizens, but to protect them from arbitrary punishment by the government. The government has to convince twelve jurors to unanimously convict.
It isn't perfect, and they don't always get it right, but it's the best we know how to do.
