@actuallyautistic @neurodivergentblind Curious if this is an #ActuallyAutistic thing, a #NeurodivergentBlind thing, or just a me thing. Sounds that, when identified, don't remotely faze me will drive me up a wall if I can't either perceive or envision what is making them. It's almost like the unknown factor triggers me more than the sound itself.
@Tarrenvane @actuallyautistic @neurodivergentblind Yes, I do the same thing. Once I identify the sound, I'm fine but I fixate on unknown sounds. It apparently has a look associated with it because my friends will ask me what I'm listening to and tell me I have my listening face on. I'm blind. Never been diagnosed with autism but I definitely have some neurodivergent traits so I don't know for sure what which is the bigger contributor but I suspect it's a little of both.
@neurodivergentblind @actuallyautistic @atfarnum Funny story about that "look" thing: My partner and I were visiting her dad, so the unknown-sound-trigger wasn't really an issue since I was already in a space of expecting unfamiliar sounds. My partner's dad was cutting some green waste, and she and I were debating what the sound was. He let us debate it for a minute before he finally told us what it was. But he could tell we were trying to figure out what the sound was.
@Tarrenvane totally a probably all of that thing. YOur'e blind and nd, so am I, I have this thing. IT also depends on what kind of sound it is that's happening. But i have experienced this.
@cordova5029 Yeah, type of sound and context does make a difference. I'm more triggered by unidentified sounds in my own home environment than I am by those in places outside the home. I think, as I said in an earlier post, that this has to do with expecting the unexpected. When I'm away from home, I'm expecting to hear sounds that aren't readily identifiable, but when I'm at home, I have a certain expectation that I should be able to recognize what's making what sound where.
@Tarrenvane all of this. Unkown sounds especially if they sound offputting are rather unnerving. It's like, wtf is that/ how is that happening, where... ok, downstairs in the... huh? why is the drain bubbling liek that. joking of course, but just an example.
