The longer Biden enables Netanyahu, the more his presidency is at risk | Mohamad Bazzi - Lemmy.World

Biden, a supposed foreign policy pragmatist, doesn’t seem bothered that the US is one of the few states that continues to wholeheartedly sustain Israel’s war on Gaza. In fact, Biden has staked his political future on his support for Netanyahu and Israel – and Biden is losing. In this year’s presidential election, where he will most likely face Donald Trump once again, Biden has already lost support among young progressives, Black and Arab American voters, who are all rightfully angry at his refusal to restrain Israel. Biden allies are raising the alarm that he could lose Michigan, a swing state with substantial Black, Arab and Muslim American voting blocs, because of his Middle East policies. Congressman Ro Khanna, a Biden supporter and progressive Democrat from California who has tried to mediate between Biden’s campaign and Michigan Democrats, warned his team this week: “We cannot win Michigan with status quo policy.” The Biden administration has consistently underplayed the leverage it has over Israel and Netanyahu. “I think that sometimes people pretend that the United States of America has a magic wand that it can wave to make any situation in the world roll out in exactly the way that we would want it to and that is never the case,” Matthew Miller, the state department spokesperson, said at a press conference on 12 February. Miller’s flippant comment raises an important question: if Biden can’t use billions of dollars in military aid – and the ability to literally cut off Israel’s supply of bombs – to force Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire, what could Biden do with a magic wand?

And if he cuts Israel loose, he loses MORE votes AND donations thanks to the large block of Jewish voters and fundraisers.

He’s taking a calculated risk. Yes, supporting Israel might cost him Michigan, do you want him losing the Jewish vote which then puts states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and California in play?

He has a path to victory without Michigan, he has NONE without California and New York.

It’s beyond sickening that this genocide has gone on for almost 6 months. I voted Uncommitted and I will not be voting for Biden.
Enjoy the 2nd Trump administration. Especially when he backs Israel even harder than Biden does and starts enacting their worst policies here.
How would rewarding the democrats for their active support of a genocide (with the US military directly) not make them double down on all future genocides?
It absolutely would not teach them anything because the people who fund both sides don’t care. Republicans will absolutely destroy this country with 4 more years in control. Democrats aren’t perfect, but they’re much better than Republicans.

Democrats aren’t perfect, but they’re much better than Republicans.

Funding, sending weapons to, sending our navy to protect a genocide is a far cry from not being ‘perfect’

Republicans suck, stop using them as an excuse for a literal genocide- or as a threat to get people to support a genocide.

I used to think this line of thinking was dangerous and was going to help Trump win reelection. But I think you're right, we can't let the threat of a Republican being elected coerce into supporting a genocide.

The only clear answer is to teach the Democrats they need to hear and listen to us and champion our policies. The only way I can see to do that is to throw my support entirely behind Donald Trump and other Republican candidates up and down the ballot.

Maybe once only right wing candidates are winning the Democrats will learn that the only way to power is to run extremely left wing candidates and we'll finally see some progress.
