Mitch McConnell did so much to destroy our democracy that it’s hard to pick just one thing. But Josh Marshall says this is the worst:

"These days you often hear reporters and commentators saying matter of factly that legislation requires 60 votes in the Senate. This is truly McConnell’s greatest accomplishment. People say this like it’s in the Constitution, like the two-thirds requirement for conviction at impeachment or to approve a treaty. (1/2)

But it is a novel development and it has radically altered U.S. politics. It transforms the federal Senate into a genuinely Calhounian body in which minority factions exercise a de facto and permanent veto over the majority.

"It’s what creates gridlock, the breeding ground of political disaffection and extremism."

Mitch McConnell: Some Thoughts on Mastery, Destruction and Minority Rule

Mitch McConnell is one of those perhaps historic figures for whom the greatness of his skill and impact are matched only in inverse by the malignity of his impact on our politics. To put it more…

May this cluck spend eternity in perpetual purgatory.

@JamesGleick the guy looks like a blobfish!
@JamesGleick I don't let McConnell off the hook, but I also put Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema in the bucket with him, enabling a minority to maintain power over the overwhelming national majority. Party labels notwithstanding, they stood with those whose goal is to paralyze government, make it unrepresentative, and serve themselves above all else.

@JamesGleick

Remember Harry Reid?

He screwed up too.

@SpaceLifeForm @JamesGleick Much like the Republicans impeaching Clinton knowing they could not remove him, lead to the Democrats impeaching Trump, knowing they could not remove him, just as COVID was getting a foothold in the USA.

And that lead to the modern-day Cadaver Synod of impeaching an ex-president.

Once you throw out the rules of fair play in any game, bringing them back is much harder.

@JamesGleick Less than one third of one percent of the population of the USA voted for Mitch McConnell. When people say this is not democracy, they're right.

No matter which side we thought we were on."

@JamesGleick I feel like the ones who mostly push that line are democrats when they have a majority but want an excuse for why they don’t deliver on promises like $15 minimum wage

@virtualinanity You mean when Democrats try to raise the minimum wage and Republicans manage to block them, you still find a way to blame Democrats?

That puts a smile on McConnell’s face.

@JamesGleick @virtualinanity oh I forgot the parlimentarian said they couldn’t so they could either ignore this role that doesn’t matter or push it through. I wonder which one the dems decided!
