@Chigaze I think it comes down to the keyboard I used to learn typing as a kid - first those Performa keyboards and then those huge, heavy IBM ones - both very clacky and noisy.

I just ordered a new Blackwidow with green clacky keys, so if, on Saturday, you hear CLICKCLICKCLICK just holler at me to slow down

@senanthic

Hmmm. I learned to type on black manual Corona (not even Smith Corona!) typewriter and happily developed excellent muscle memory and strength for quick and accurate typing.

I definitely prefer lighter-touch keyboards and also smaller ones, such as those sized for iPad Mini, for less finger-travelling distance.

YMMV

😀

@senanthic @Chigaze

I also enjoy alternate keyboards.

I'd be happy to promote the Tap2 chorded wrist module except that it runs very hot and only lasts ~3 hours at best, ffs. (The finger-ring version ran for DAYS!)

Most fun typing is on a #brailler, which is also chorded but with three fingers from each hand. Alas, I only have a manual #PerkinsBrailler so haven't had the chance to braille directly to a computer.

#typing

@likelyjanlukas @Chigaze I've never gotten to use a typewriter! I'm fortunate enough to be a touch-typer (is that still what they call it when you don't have to look at the screen while typing?) and I really feel like the extra traveling on keys and the noise feedback helps, but indeed YMMV... that's why we have a billion keyboard models!

@senanthic

I'm happy to setup an outdoor typing session with you sometime if you like. I have a couple of models that are still quite functional (and a couple more that need my time and attention first).

🙂

IMO there is a real joy in how typing on a #mechanicalTypewriter feels and sounds when writing. 🙂

But I'm also glad I didn't have to work in a typing pool with a room full of those in use! A classroom was MORE than noisy enough to make me bonkers! 😱

@Chigaze

@likelyjanlukas honestly I agree with you on typewriters - I really love the essence of them, the weight of the keys and the... realness of their materials, if that makes sense. I wouldn't even mind the noise (normally loud noise is not good for me) - I find rhythmic noise, like typing, to not be so difficult.

@senanthic

That's a good point re rhythmic noise. Alas,
My fellow typing class students were not so quick on the rhythm part! 😂

And yes, a love of the heft and tactility of things makes lots of sense to me! ❤️
