Listen, I'm so friggin disgusted over what is probably happening over at Automattic (Tumblr, WordPress dot com) so, if you have a blog over at WordPress dot com, I will help you migrate to a self-hosted WordPress install. Yes, for free. From a professional web dev.

Email me: [email protected] or send a contact form submission at www.foundationwebdev.com/contact/

Do not be shy. I can have this done for you and onto a new hoster (provided you are prepared) in literal minutes.

If you are just lost as to what to do, I'll advise you too

I took Aimee up on her offer to help move WordPress blogs to self-hosted WordPress installs, and am very happy with the process and result!

She worked with me through a few false starts (apparently I like doing things the hard way) with patience and a positive attitude. Then followed up with helpful advice on maintenance, back-up and security.

Yes, this is a shameless plug for @aimeecozza !

@dbaplanb happy to help! Thank you for the plug Paula! ❤️
@aimeecozza Maybe a stupid question but what is happening at Wordpress?
@MartinH Automattic planning to sell user content from WordPress (dot com) and Tumblr to LLM companies (AI)
@aimeecozza
Ah, I see. I´m with Joomla since many, many years but you never know...
@aimeecozza @MartinH ok that’s it then, I’ll finally have to move.
@aimeecozza @MartinH I read it that they already did and opt out is for future posts ☹️

@thattommyhall @MartinH wow that's gross and skeevy

I read they originally even included private data like unanswered asks on Tumblr

@aimeecozza Not a wordpresser myself, but sharing for those who do.

It's tempting though given how hard Jekyll is to install these days.

@lwflouisa yep. Share away! Hopefully it reaches those who need it

@aimeecozza

I don't need this service but I just wanted to say: you rock. Thanks for doing this.

@amin happy to help even just one person not get absolutely screwed by someone's shit decision

@aimeecozza

I’ve been on WP since 2016 so I’m pretty good at managing the style and content on my site, but I don’t really understand how self-hosting works, how much I can make style and formatting changes (compared to how I make changes now), and costs, etc.

I’m interested in getting my content away from AI, but I don’t want to use up your time with length explanations.

Also, about 1/3 of my content is copyrighted. Not sure that matters w/ AI.

@PamPortlandWriter shoot me an email? Let's chat. This sounds more doable to me than you're making it out but I'm sure we can both clarify better through screenshots and not limited emails :)

@aimeecozza
I like the idea of getting away from WP and AI, but there’s also a part of me not independent enough to tackle this project.

It’s a me problem, but I sincerely appreciate the offer.

@aimeecozza Forgive my ignorance, but what’s going on with Automattic?

I just checked my newsfeeds and haven’t seen anything. I’m not involved with any publishing - just curious.

Edit: Ah, now I found it: https://gizmodo.com/wordpress-tumblr-plan-sell-user-content-ai-companies-1851291225

WordPress and Tumblr Plan to Sell User Content to AI Companies

Automattic is trying to reassure users they can opt out of training AI.

@aimeecozza do you know if there are ways to download all your WP content? I have 3 WP dot com sites I don’t really use anymore but would hate to hand that over to ai …
@aimeecozza I will absolutely take you up on this.
@aimeecozza What happened at Automattic? What did I miss ?
@double_a_runi here's an article! engadget.com/tumblr-and-wordpress-posts-will-reportedly-be-used-for-openai-and-midjourney-training-204425798.html
@aimeecozza I wasn't aware of this story so thank you for bringing attention to it. I need to strongly consider moving, and will consider dreamhost at the top of the list on your recommendation.
@busywyvern for sure! Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to answer them if I can.

@aimeecozza
Take a peek at elest.io
One can host said migratees on a CI/CD server with WordPress pipelines super fast. EU and US locations and a few providers to choose from. Domain DNS should support cname flattening for best results, A records can break if the pipeline requires moving.

Companies getting into AI need to stop screwing around. Yeah Pandora's box is open but training should only happen on:
Opt-in > Public domain > PAYING ROYALTIES TO THE PEOPLE YOU TOOK DATA FROM!

@DavBot this. Thanks for the info! I will def check it out

@aimeecozza
It's a super fun deployment service! You want to experiment with a web app/stage, spin up a server for pennies an hour and go hard without breaking your brain on the infrastructure part.

Migrating applications and the app user data does need S3/backblaze backups configured on the app, or just spin a server with MinIO.

I'm working on backed-up game servers, so only running when someone wants to play them, dropping my online multiplayer bill a few bucks a year for a bunch of games.

@aimeecozza I love this. As a fellow web dev and WP.org pro, I wish I were less burnt out so I could join your offer. (It's also very in the spirit the .org community wants to foster.)
@mathias I've got a post drafted for next week showing people how to migrate themselves so they can at least start it and have someone like us come in and clean it up if it goes sideways so hopefully that'll help too!
