Bluesky has announced that today they have started with federation, allowing anyone to host their own data on the #bluesky network.

In a blog post they announced that anyone can now host their own PDS, framing it as a way to control your own data, and also explaining how it differs from Mastodon.

Bluesky describes it as an 'early access of federation for self-hosters'.

@fediversereport That dashboard is great and kudos to them for getting over 5MM registered users.

Do wish it tracked monthly active users specifically. Unique daily posters is as close as I can see to something adjacent to that.

this site started recently with really good granular data. for a user to count as active it needs to have made an activity (like/follow/post) in that timeperiod.

accurate monthly active user data should become available in like 3 weeks.

they are currently just below 500k daily active users

@laurenshof @tchambers @fediversereport I don't really have a stake in this fight but I find it interesting that there are 5,000,000 + accounts but posts from only about 2.3 million post authors, and, as you state here, 500,000 daily active users. Does that mean that it Blue Sky has mainly a hard-core set of of users? Is this typical of social media platforms? It seems like quite a small slice of the total. And do these numbers mean that over half the accounts have been created but are not used?
