Ma’mounRandom bed thought: Seeing people genuinely trying to justify horrendous beliefs is making me think. Maybe there’s no such thing as pure evil people in this world, just people with extremely distorted views of the world?
Matt Massicotte@mamouneyya I think this is 99% correct. People that do awful things believe they are actually doing something good/justified/necessary.
@mattiem Exactly! It’s actually very interesting if you think about it. It makes me think what can we do to make people see other point of views and have more empathy.
@mamouneyya This is why, to a close approximation, I think the only truly important thing is that we a) care about what is true b) make sure we ourselves actually know what is true and c) fight propaganda and misinformation with everything we’ve got.
@mattiem I think one other important thing is to genuinely try to see the “truth” from the other angle. I keep seeing people getting super aggressive about what they believe is the truth, but it’s really easy to see things from a certain angle sometimes because of how you were raised or because of what you have experienced in your life.
@mamouneyya Of course that’s a good point. Lots of things don’t have a “truth” in the sense I was talking about.
