The story of the SSH port is 22.

The SSH port is 22. This is the story of how it got that port number. And practical configuration instructions.

@nixCraft I remember. I used Kerberos 4 then but wanted some more secure.
@nixCraft *nix history is my favorite kind of history.
@nixCraft i remember using rlogin and rsh.
@nixCraft ahh. Yes. That’s right. We used to connect to other machines using Telnet. EHLO.

@nixCraft

22 was originally half of telnet. Once TCP freed up that second port, it made sense to shift that over to a better client protocol.

@mwl @nixCraft yep. NCP, what we used before TCP used different ports for each direction.

Hence why we have so many old protocols using every other port.

@drscriptt @mwl @nixCraft I never knew why they were all odd, thanks!

@jayalane πŸ˜‰ because history.

Newer things have been filling in over the inter waning years.

@nixCraft First thing I do on a new server is move ssh from 22 to somewhere between 1024 and 49151. Along with sshguard, gets rid of most of the script kiddies.
@nixCraft thanks for sharing! I love those kind of stories and little tidbits about IT :)

Joyce Kathleen Reynolds replies 😬

@nixCraft The IANA registry is the Hollywood Boulevard of protocols - some that you recognize, some that you hardly even heard of.

@nixCraft one of my few claims to fame is that Jon Postel once bought me a beer. He did it in the context of explaining why my protocol proposal wouldn't be accepted, but he was very gracious about it.

Genuinely great man.

@nixCraft Without paying millions for lawyers and a year-long stakeholder process? Wow, the Internet really was better in 1995.
@nixCraft Then all the bot scanners came in and now many people make it 2222 or some variant

@nixCraft The IANA's justification policy for low-numbered ports is more strict now, but the actual allocation has always been and is still "just pick some numbers lol".

I wrote 2ping, a UDP network utility, and its IANA-assigned port is 15998/udp. The person processing applications that day back in 2010 decided to start at 16000 and work down, and my application was third on the pile.
