The no-longer-abandoned Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA. Closed in 1970, ESP was left to decay until Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site Inc. began offering tours to the public in 1994. Now, it's one of the city's major tourist destinations, drawing over 220,000 visitors a year.

Luckily, they were kind enough to let me into some of the areas that are still off limits to the public 😉 https://www.abandonedamerica.us/eastern-state-penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary (Philadelphia, PA) | Abandoned America

Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary is a stunning reminder of the lengths we went to to inspire remorse in criminals.

@AbandonedAmerica This is *such* a well done museum. One of my absolute favorites.
@museumphile same here. Always something new to see when you go back.
@AbandonedAmerica Most notably, this was one of the locations on MTV’s Fear, the best reality tv show.
@garretble I never saw that one!

@AbandonedAmerica I got you, fam.

Here’s a playlist with every episode. The eastern state one is down this list some.

@AbandonedAmerica being a penitentiary, they were kind to let you OUT!
@carbonara that is true. I am always glad to see an abandoned prison, and always relieved to leave.

@AbandonedAmerica I've been there! The place feels oppressive and spooky AF.

The part in the courtyard with statistics about incarceration definitely made me think. I think it definitely influenced my feelings on prison abolition when I heard about it later.

I think it's good the museum is there, if nothing else so people not in the system can get a feel for how wrong those places feel.

@solarpunkgnome yep, exactly. I really admire how they have used "entertainment" to really force you to look at issues about our carceral state. It's exactly what a museum in this kind of place should do imo
