"The antisemitism that we're dealing with today does not say its name explicitly. The opposite is true: If you want to hold someone liable for being antisemitic, they will deny it. What does the new antisemite say? He says, he is not who he is made out to be. He is not an antisemite, but an Anti-Zionist!"

-- Jean Améry: Der neue Antisemitismus (1976)

@eyald

Thank you for quoting the great Jean Amery.

He lived in Brussels but published in the German weekly papers and monthly magazines. His books were masterpieces of nuanced essay writing, subtle but unforgiving in their criticism of social and political falsehoods.

His intellectual autobiography Unmeisterliche Wanderjahre was key to my own path to independence.

His book on his personal experiences during the Holocaust (At the Mind's Limits) is unsparing and eye opening.
