1870s Argyle Street tenement in Glasgow with a column of apparently bricked-up windows. lf you follow them up to the roof, you'll see a chimney stack directly above them indicating there is a chimney flue directly behind them. This means real windows could never have been placed here. Instead, they're false windows added to maintain the symmetry of the buildings's facade.

@thisismyglasgow what does “tenement” mean to you? Here in the US it’s been made into a pejorative https://hti.osu.edu/opper/lesson-plans/progressive-reforms/images/the-tenement-a-menace-to-all

Victorian era flats usually a three or four story building. They are still really popular for single people ( I lived in one). Big thick walls and ten feet high ceilings (for ventilation) they can be stunning inside.
I miss that flat.
A lot of those rows are in fantastic parts of the city, the South Side or West End.

@Lyle To some extent that was true in Glasgow in the 1950s and 1960s when a lot of them were seen as slum housing and many were demolished to be replaced by (then) modern highrise flats/tower blocks. This is now very much seen has having been a big mistake, and the remaining tenements are now very popular, albeit refurbished ones, complete with in-door plumbing and all!
