The truly impressive thing about #FOSDEM is how the organisers go out of their way to create a time and place for people to meet, share and enjoy being amongst similarly thinking people. Since so many years. Staying true to that principle of being a catalyst. Not an influencer. Of staying in the background and make it all look so natural and easy. But I see and know about all the unbelievably hard work and logistics needed to pull it off. You. All. Are. Unsung. Heroes.
More than 900 speakers. The (wireless) network that Just Works. The food. The drinks. All the rooms. The streams. The recordings. The booths. Keeping everything clean, yes, especially toilets. I am always impressed and humbled. You made so many things possible by being g who you are. Thank you @fosdem for all those years past and the hopefully many years to come.
A gathering of this size that hosts 8000+ people. Based on trust. No registration. No expensive tickets that you can only buy in a few seconds if you are lucky. @fosdem does this since 20+ years. And we all should really thank the ULB to accept us bunch of weirdos on their campus. Since all these years. It’s the best place to be for me. It’s where I fill up my positive energy stock every year.
We live in complicated times. So much negativity hits our brains. War. Nazis. Anti-whatever folks. But as soon as I arrive at ULB at the first weekend of February, @fosdem makes it possible for me to forget about all of that and engage with smart and fun people that work on making things better, The Open Way. It won’t solve everything. But it brings back a smile in me. Thank you for that. I really need that.
