Open vs. Closed: The Fight for a New Internet

@Techaltar I really love this video as a full introduction to the Fediverse! Also very awesome for you to mention mastodon.de? I kind of cannot believe you did that since we're very irrelevant
@Techaltar i always wait for your new video release

@Techaltar great video indeed. Yea, I think this time around regulators are the key to adopting and scaling the Fediverse the way it is. XMPP and RSS have both pretty much died out in the mainstream and the email providers are all struggling to wall it down as well. I even see as pretty much none of my friends are using email clients and they tend to use vendor specific apps for every email address they have. Have a Yahoo address? Just download the app. Have an Outlook address? Get the app.

Even people that I know and work in IT seem to have this behavior.

And I am not an IT specialist at all - yet here I am: I use FairEmail and @thunderbird for my email needs, I follow a bunch of RSS feeds in lots of readers, I have two XMPP addresses, one provided by the Friendica server I am on right now, I have a Matrix address, and even tried out serverless solutions such as Briar.

@Techaltar I like the style of your videos and your voice. And of course the contents… Thank you!

@Techaltar
Great! You are one of the few tech-ytbers that puts thought and research in there vids. It pays out: you make a great job at finding all relevant aspects and weight them against each other. Which is what im really missing in almost all the other tech-related content.

For me this video feels a bit cramped. Fast talk, there are few pauses e.g. to seperate chapters, no interview clips. Imo giving the vid more space would make it easier to watch and comprent. We know: long content works!

@Techaltar
I don't get the owner thing: If you make something public you can not expect to make it private again.
On twitter people will make screenshots. On youtube its a bit more unlikely that somebody downloads the video, but it becomes more likely that people do it with time and "controvertiality". + screenshots and retelling the content.

You can't own published information.

@homo_particeps
Well, you know there is this ancient concept of copyrights. Legally that's still a thing. 🀷

@Techaltar

@pieselpriemel
Copyright is, first of all , a vauge term. The core aspects: right of attribution and right of integrity don't get hurt by sharing work across a federated network.
In fact i can't imagine a case where it would, except you want to delete your work. In my post i explained why WANTING this doesn't make sense. Its important to keep in mind that copyright only applies to work, not to information.
@homo_particeps @Techaltar In principle I agree, but in practice Internet sometimes forgets. Unless you put our something wild as an influencer, or it hasn't been long enough online to be scanned by the Internet Archive, you have some reasonable chance to actually delete it: the only publicly existing copy, from a centralised platform. Fediverse makes it just a bit tougher.
@etua_en
True. It can forget. The fediverse can too. The thing is you have no guarantee. And the probability with stuff that you care about (controversial stuff) isn't high.
Although i have to admit it may be a bit lower on the fediverse. I would argue in most cases it makes no differnce in practice.
@Techaltar
Monthly (or per vid) donation target for publishing on peertube?

@Techaltar : Eugene posted a link to your video on the Fediverse! 🀩

What a dub! Congrats for making another masterpiece video! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

@Techaltar that was a great video about the Fediverse, thanks for showing our instance!
@Techaltar
These guys have no morals. They want to get richer and satisfy their egotism at the expense of everybody else!
@Techaltar This is wonderful! I am very excited for the interviews.
@Techaltar just installed and made mastodon account bcz of your video πŸ˜€ πŸ‘
@Techaltar The title card almost scared me away, but it was a very insightful video about the Fediverse and its opportunities.
@Techaltar just signed up after watching this video :)
@Techaltar really great video! And now I'm gonna jump into the bonus interviews on Nebula!

@Techaltar thank you sir. I did! Watched a couple of them already. Very cool to hear these perspectives on the fediverse and where this all is headed.

PS - Love this model of additional content on Nebula to dive into. Nicely done.

Cheers, have a great weekend.

@Techaltar
Being on Mastodon but also paying for Nebula works for me. πŸ‘
As there are no comments on Nebula, perhaps they should set up their own instance on Mastodon where they can promote content and facilitate conversations? πŸ€”
@Techaltar hearing about threads joinjng is what convinced me to join at last since i have most of my twitter followings over on threads.
@Techaltar this was a great watch, thank you for making a video on the fediverse!
@Techaltar I noticed the video was extremely focused on Mastodon. Have you considered interviewing the other server creators as well? I think talking with Misskey's founders would be especially interesting being that they're non-western developers who started with a very different sort of a self contained social platform and then expanded it into a federating one via AP.
