If you are in the EU, the newest beta of iOS 17.4 has the alternative default browser picker when you first open Safari.

Here’s what it looked like on my French iPhone:

A few things to note:

• I’m not able to reinvoke the picker. It’s only presented to you when you first open Safari after updating to iOS 17.4

• The list of browsers to pick from is different for every EU member state.

• The order is random.

• Although Safari is presented as one of the options in the randomized list, tapping “Not Now” will effectively just make it the default.

Apple Shares List of Alternate Browsers That Will Be Available to EU Users in iOS 17.4

One element of the changes coming to iOS in the European Union is that beginning with iOS 17.4, EU users will see a choice of browsers when they first launch Safari that can be set as the systemwide default browser. For each country, that list will contain the 12 most popular browsers from its App

@nileane I can't wait to see which random browser family members will end up because something that isn't Safari looked cool, or because they didn't see it is a scrollable view 😂😭

Fingers crossed for them noticing the ‘Not Now’ instead, and just dismissing it.

@nileane Chrome being „below the fold“ is intentional, I assume.

@nileane I wonder how the order is decided since it’s the 3rd screenshot I see and it’s never the same order ? Random ?
@nileane I love that the Not Now button makes Safari the default default browser
@nileane I want firefox with their own browser engine! But alas, I'm in the UK and I'm damned sure Apple won't extend the benefits of what is in effect an anti-trust settlement to Brexitland.
@cstross Given the way our government is going we might not even have Apple around soon.
@nini I suspect the UK government will cave (without admitting it) before shoving Apple out the door. Ministers love their iPhones too much.
@cstross @nileane have they stopped allowing you to create a second Apple Store account in another country, used for free apps or funded with gift cards? I’ve used US-only apps via that trick in the past.
@nileane @viticci does this also open the chosen browser whenever we use “Search Web”? I’m asking this because I’ve noticed that right now it simply opens Safari.
@JeroenSchaper @viticci If I set Arc as the default web browser it does open it instead of Safari
@nileane @viticci sweet! That works so much better than how it works now! Thanks for testing this 👍🏻
@nileane @viticci How long until Apple will rename Safari to Apple Safari or Afari in EU? 😅
@kkolakowski @nileane @viticci actually, the list of browsers is legally mandated to be randomized 😂
@nickfoster Aah, somehow I thought it was in alphabetical order, but that's right, it could've been too easy to override 😅
@kkolakowski I thought that at first too, especially because Brave is at the top. And then I remembered that I heard it has to be randomized

@nileane @viticci

Has Firefox attempted a mobile browser?

I recall at one point, on government websites, ACA, Covid, they could not function properly on Mobile Safari and I ~had~ to switch to Chrome. It’s been a few years.

@Chancerubbage @nileane @viticci Not sure why Chrome would’ve worked any different, as until now, Chrome has had to use the same rendering engine on iOS as Safari. But yes, Mozilla have been working on a version of Gecko for iOS for the past year, in anticipation of Apple's recent announcement. https://www.theregister.com/2023/02/07/mozilla_google_apple_webkit/
Mozilla, like Google, is looking ahead to the end of Apple's WebKit rule

Work on a Gecko-based version of Firefox for iOS is underway, again
