@popey hey mate, is the Mastodon instance having a day? I'm starting to receive tens, maybe hundreds of notifications via email, but 0 notifications on the web UI.

I guess these were all old email notifications that didn't get sent until now?

Anyhow, this is not a big deal for me, just wanted to let you know

@popey needless to say, happy to help if needed
@andrea Oof, sorry about that! The email setup was broken up until recently. I didn't think it would send a bazillion of old mails out when fixed. Sorry about that :S
@popey no problem. Email filter to the rescue! 🙂
@andrea I think you can turn them off, too.
@popey I already turned them off hours ago. Still coming. I think it's a huge backlog
@andrea Wanna DM me a screenshot or forward a mail to me? Are these olde mails?

@popey forwarded you an email.

The date of the emails is the current date, but they're all about toots I made several days ago. I'm at 400+ emails now. I think there are about 2000 more that need to arrive. Sending of emails Is throttled for sure

@andrea So sorry for this.

@popey ok, the email storm has come to an end, so here are some stats:

First email was received on 25 Jan 2024 09:53:10 UTC, last one on 28 Jan 2024 15:15:27 UTC, for a total duration of 3 days 5 hours 22 minutes 17 seconds.

The total number of emails received was 3087. The average rate of arrival was 1 email every 1.5 minutes.

That was fun!

@andrea wow, that’s insane. Did you previously turn on all of the email notification options? I can see the peak on SendGrid, and it looks like 99.9% of them are to you then. Sorry

@popey no worries! Yes, I had all the email notifications on when I checked. I guess I turned them on when I created my account (if it's not the default). I was probably expecting a daily digest or similar, certainly not an email for everything.

I think this is something that Mastodon needs to improve on. Definitely not something you need to be sorry about.
