Kinukake-no-michi (きぬかけの路), the 'Silk-draped Path', is a 2km stretch of road that joins the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺 The Golden Pavilion), Ryōan-ji (龍安寺) and Ninnai-ji (仁和寺).

As our Garden Teahouse sits on this famous route, let's take a tour👣

Let's start at the road's southern end.

Ninna-ji (仁和寺) was founded in 888 by Emperor Uda (宇多天皇), and for most of its life head priests were drawn from the imperial family.
The temple is famed for its groves of uniquely stunted 'omuro-zakura' (御室桜) cherry trees.

But what does Kinukake-no-michi (きぬかけの路) have to do with draped silk?🤔

Well, the road winds through the foothills of Mt. Kinugasa (衣笠山), known also as Mt. Kinukake (絹笠山).
The mountain is named after an incident involving Emperor Uda (宇多天皇).

During a summer stay at Omuro Goshō (御室御所), Uda impulsively thought it would be cooling to see the nearby mountain covered in snow. He had men unravel white bolts of silk on the slopes to create the wintry effect.
The mountain was soon christened Mt. Kinukake (絹笠山).

Right beside Ninna-ji is the (often overlooked) temple of Renge-ji (蓮華寺), a site that traces it origins to Kūkai, who enshrined a stone image of Fudō Myōō (不動明王) in 806 within a grotto on the north west bank of Hirosawa Pond (広沢池).

Ruined during the Ōnin War in 1467, a wealthy merchant later restored Renge-ji on Ondo-yama (音戸山), employing the monk Tansho (但唱) to create 3m tall granite statues of the 5 Wisdom Buddhas.

By his death 6 years later in 1641 Tanshō had managed to complete 12 images in total.
