@Miniver Apple makes products with great UX, that are anti-standards, anti-repairability, and ultimately anti-consumers.

Most people selfishly vote for "a simpler thing", while unknowingly voting against interoperability, standards, repairability, and overall ethic.

It's a well known fact that most people tend to vote against their own interests.

@Miniver I think you don't keep tab on all the things they do, like not adopting USB-C to get MFI money, not adopting webp for over a decade, only adopting VP9 through webrtc (because it's in the spec) but not in video tags, rejecting RCS. Purposefully crippling the web on iOS (both enforcing a unique engine and keeping it purposefully behind to protect their 30% cut). Selling access to their users to Google for billions and then getting 34% ads revenue. I worked there, Apple is not your friend.

@lobau

I am not hanging a halo on Apple. The rake they demand on the App Store is obscene. They jerk around partners and competitors. They make many platform & app design decisions which are bad for the industry, and some which are bad for users.

But the key to their success is that their products are generally •very• good, and most criticisms of Apple one sees ignore the driving design choices which animate their product decisions.

@Miniver I personally would never promote this ecosystem, as it goes against my principles, but yes, for people who want to feel secure in an enclosed ecosystem, governed by a "benevolent" dictator, I think it's a pretty good option.
