On the internet I talk mostly about justice, politics (both tactical & deep), design (primarily UX, IxD, and urban design), systems thinking, TTRPGs + other geekkultur, esotericism (magick, Pagan theology, and such), and other weirdnerd stuff like that

My brother & I wrote to the Arizona Corporation Commission, who are responsible for oversight of the utility company that killed our mother

Forget for a moment all of the other details about our mom’s case. Regardless of how and why she was behind on her electric bill, it was approaching 100º when APS shut off her power. They knew heat kills. You know heat kills. Change the rules. Please don’t let more families suffer the same tragedy as ours.

Our letter to the Arizona Corporation Commission — Arizona Public Service killed our mother

Arizona Public Service killed our mother

More reporting on how Arizona Public Service killed my mother … and how one of the electeds responsible for regulating them said a bunch of vile things about how they did nothing wrong

GOP official loses it, publicly blames bereaved man for mom’s heat death

Heat killed a woman after APS cut her power last May. State utility regulator Nick Myers told her son, “I'm more blaming you.”

Phoenix New Times

I put together a proper website —

My mother Kate Korman owed $500 to Arizona Public Service, so shortly before her 82nd birthday they cut off her electricity. Temperatures were in the 90s and climbing.

Without air conditioning, the heat killed her within a few days.

The leader of the state agency responsible for regulating the power company that killed my mother thinks I don’t want to talk about how she died.

Boy is he wrong. He says APS’ policy is okay because it only kills frail old ladies. I sure do want to talk about that.

All this.

Will it surprise anyone to hear how much a PITA it was to GIVE Arizona “Public Service” money to switch the power back on to make it possible for my brother & me to go through her things after the heat killed her?

@Miniver@mastodon.social Utility companies hold life and death in their hands and they sure aren't run like it. We were involved in some wild fuckery that got our power shut off because our meters were switched and our neighbors weren't responding to PG&E. I learned that if you don't respond to a gas inspection notice, they shut your electricity off to get your attention. And they were trying to get our neighbors' attention by sending them letters. In the mail. To gen Z dudes. Getting it fixed was so many phone calls. If it's this fucked for me, an assertive internet professional, I fear for everyone who is older, disabled, ESL, etc.

Will it surprise you that there is dirty money and dirty politics behind the policy which let Arizona “Public Service” kill my mother?

I bet it will not

https://campaignlegal.org/update/arizona-corporation-commission-agency-captured-dark-money

I thought at the time that it was some weird fluke that Arizona “Public Service” cut off my mother when it was too hot for her to survive without air conditioning, but of course it turns out that it is policy which a local activist has been fighting for years.

I also have an aversion to begging for re-shares, but I hope folks will do me a solid this time.

Embarrassing APS is the only thing I can do for my mother now.

I have a deep aversion to local TV news, but now I am ON it because last year, the power company Arizona Public Service cut off electricity to my mother’s house outside of Phoenix, killing her.

It is well-known that in the original conception of the TV series ‘Supernatural’, road-tripping monster-hunting brothers Sam & Dean Winchester are inspired by road-tripping beatniks Sal Paradise & Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac’s novel ‘On The Road’, who themselves were based on Kerouac and his real-life friend Neal Cassidy …
