@Satori Stay warm, Skye! (and family)

This cold snap reminds me of when that first (?) rover landed on Mars, and the TV reports were giving the Martian weather -- it was -27C or something like that where the rover was, and it was -39 here on the Canadian prairies.

"Officially colder than Mars! Remind us why we live here!"

@cazabon @Satori Have no idea why you'd live there. I just couldn't. Sudbury's my northern winter limit. And with today's wind, brrrrr...

@Byronrabbit @cazabon Family is here. I blame my Grandparents 🤣! For us, honestly at this point, that’s it! But it’s love and the best reason, I think. 💜

I came across letters from my Grandpa to my Grandma who had moved out first from Winnipeg (and PQ before that) when we were cleaning out the house after he’d passed. She followed with the three kids after he was settled.

There was a lot of “it’s still snowing”… “it’s quite cold here”… “it’s still snowing”… “very cold today”… 😂🤭

@Satori @Byronrabbit

My partner is in the museum field and has worked a lot with the history of the settlement of the Canadian prairies. There are accounts of a settler sending for his wife after he has set up a homestead, she arrives and steps off the train to see nothing but endless flat prairie in every direction -- and breaks down crying.

Your grandmother was made of sterner stuff, it seems.

(not to mention "keep the pig inside the soddie with you in the winter for warmth" and such ...)

@cazabon @Byronrabbit Oh! That would be such fascinating study. My four grandparents were all the children of homesteaders. Such hardships! One was a duokhobor writer in Blaine Lake, another a schoolteacher in a one room schoolhouse in Moose Jaw (love that Don’t Shoot the Teacher movie) and the others suffered severe poverty, near starving and harsh conditions in Manitoba. They’re the most amazing stories!

I absolutely love the pig tip, and will keep that in mind for next cold snap… 🤣🤣🤣

@Satori @Byronrabbit

My partner informs me that it was more usually the cow that they brought into the soddie for warmth. More heat, less smell I guess 😆

Is that movie Why Shoot the Teacher? I couldn't find the other name, and this one sounds related. I've never heard of it before - I will keep an eye out for it. Thanks!

@cazabon @Byronrabbit Yes! That’s the name, apologies for the name mix up. 😆 It’s very authentic in spots, it’s a good one! Bless all those teachers of the one room school houses back in the day! My Grandma (duokhobor side) remembers standing on the desks and having a lark with the teacher trying to kindly talk her down (she didn’t know a lick of English back then, of course!)
@Satori @cazabon I don't know the film, but have read about all the morality rules those teachers had to follow. And the extra duties, like lugging buckets of water and filling lamps.
