the adhd urge to use parentheses in every sentence (you thought of something else that doesn't fit into the previous sentence structure you'd thought up)
@julialuna me chatting with someone in n simultaneous streams enclosed in ever increasing amounts of parentheses
@julialuna ADHD chatting - lisp code
(Handshake meme bottom text) lots of parentheses

@julialuna And then you start noticing you put parenthesis inside your parenthesis because you have had more thoughts while writing the first ones and self-control is hard when it's about writing things that seem interesting.

Working on that here but often it's a lot of work just to notice it.

@julialuna
And realising you're using too many (parentheses, that is) so use a few dashes - hyphen or em - instead.
@AlisonW @julialuna I'm probably not living with adhd, but I recognise the pattern. My mind always comes up with more stuff along the way when starting to express something in writing or with speech.

@julialuna Closely related to, but not to be confused with, the autistic urge to use parentheses in every sentence (due to constantly thinking of related details or ideas that feel important to clarify or add as context).

((and those of us who are both are just screwed lol))

@julialuna me irl

sometimes I'll even have parentheses within parentheses

@julialuna Also making extensive use of semicolons; great for putting two related sentences together without caring about sentence structure (also technically avoiding run-on sentences).
@julialuna I actually have to spend considerably more time to remove parenthesis and restructure sentences compared to just writing
@julialuna I feel seen (I just did it in a shot message to my daughter!)
@julialuna i sometimes even use nested parantheses 😫
@julialuna I put stuff in parentheses and then end up rephrasing it anyway to delete them again

@julialuna 99% invisible did a satire episode called 88% parentheticals.

I've never felt so simultaneously attacked and validated in my life.

@julialuna I always have 6 simultaneous streams of thought going on at once (in my head), and I have to find some way (like using parentheses) to cram all of that into the nonsense I post online (here on fedi mostly).
@julialuna this is when every thought comes with a bonus thought
@julialuna @peachymist Often, it's a context thing that's important enough to write down but that I don't want fully distracting/derailing the larger point

@julialuna I wasn't even aware people consider it a problem xD.

But what about using hyphens inside your parentheses (because you have these - and any number of other unrelated - stray thoughts).

Though I always wrote it off as more of a native language background thing; in German we tend to nest sentences and sub-sentences pretty badly and besides comma and hyphen being a thing using parentheses just felt like a smooth way to indicate a separate or less important train of thought. (or five.. or ten)

@julialuna ive never put the two together. i mean parentheses, yes! ive never associated this with adhd. but ive always struggled to find a normative amount of parenthetical asides to add. cheers.
@julialuna I've committed brackets within parentheses. It was a complex thought (though I didn't realize how complex [not until I started talking]).
