Nuclear Effects During SAC Delivery Missions

YouTube
@lauren "... At least you are assured of escaping the effects of our own nuclear weapons!"
@cstross @lauren I believe that was supposed to be a dig at the US Navy, which until 1960 deployed the AJ Savage, which was a nuclear bomber so slow that it *literally could not outrun* any nuclear bomb it dropped
@lauren
Presumably all that manual calculation of flight paths by experts is now being replaced by AI...
@weaselx86 Well, SAC bombing runs were pretty much replaced by ICBMs, so ...

@lauren @weaselx86

Sort of. The bombing mission was mostly replaced using the B52, B1, B2 as mobile missile platforms.

@lauren Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones.
@vk2bea But you still could have a pretty good time in Vegas with all that stuff.
@lauren Apparently the original line was written as "... a good time in Dallas..." but was changed after the assassination.
@lauren when I was a kid, my dad was an army corps of engineers officer and had a lot of little green books about stuff like nuclear blast radius and how many people killed, etc. those were the times.
@lauren
Quite certain my dad did watch that.
@lauren "Open the pod bay doors please, HAL" Oops, wrong script...

A SAC Delivery

Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Strategic Air Command, we have a delivery.
I don't want it, I didn't order it.
But our route was planned by expert mission planners, and IBM computers!
I still don't want it.
We can't take it back, there isn't enough fuel.
Not my problem, go away.
There's a free thermal blanket with each delivery.
Not interested. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki who would be?
But we have so much blast and thermal data now; the Mike shot too ...
Upshot-Knothole, I don't want it.
The effects, the nuclear effects! I'll just leave it on the porch.
[A flash of blinding light; the world ends]
