Your money might be burning a hole in the planet.

"Banks use your deposits to make loans to carbon-intensive industries. A new analysis finds that $1,000 in your account creates emissions equal to a flight from NYC to Seattle."

"By switching to a climate-conscious bank, you could reduce those emissions by about 75 percent, the study found. In fact, if you moved $8,000 dollars—the median balance for US customers—the reduction in your indirect emissions would be twice that of the direct emissions you’d avoid if you switched to a vegetarian diet."

The new report finds that on average, 11 of the largest US banks lend 19.4 percent of their portfolios to carbon-intensive industries. (The American Bankers Association did not immediately respond to a request to comment for this story.)

@LeBonk yes, thank you. It was copied from a previous tweet and it missed the entire URL.❤️
@ExtinctionR Switchit.green seems to be semi-scammy, and won’t give me any useful information unless I ‘sign up’. So fuck that for a game of soldiers.

@KimSJ

Agreed. I spent a while looking for lists of green and non-green banks then came to the same conclusion and gave up.

Presumably they are earning commission by migrating people's bank accounts for them (which immediately casts doubt on their credentials).

@ExtinctionR

@ExtinctionR hi, please could you share the source for this (alarming) fact?

@ExtinctionR Unfortunately neither the report referenced nor any of the source documents it lists include any mention of banks based in #Hawaii, so they give me no information I can act on.
@BruceMirken
Haven't been able to find any physical banks that are fossil free in Hawai'i but there are numerous online banking services that are available in the state listed at https://bankforgood.org/

Where we keep our money matters. Don't support companies that invest in fossil fuels. Find an account for your values #bankforgood

@ExtinctionR Where are you looking to find whether banks are carbon-free? None of the sources that were referenced in the report discussed in the article posted earlier appeared to have even looked at Hawaii banks. I really value being able to go into my bank and talk to a live human being.
@ExtinctionR Another compelling reason to use a local credit union rather than a bank.

That's why like any true member of the working class under capitalism I keep my money in my memories.
