Why does Apple Music continue to suck at suggesting music I might actually want to listen to? Maybe I have enabled some setting to make it obtuse, but it has to know by now what I listen to and what I never even bother with, and yet every time I launch the app it's just tons of whatever is most popular right now. Am I alone in this experience?

A number of people here have reminded me that I'm still paying for Pandora, which I actually like(d). But I've mainly been listening to it through Sonos, which kind of limits you to stations you already created.

So I downloaded the Pandora client, and of course Little Snitch firewall went bonkers. And still is. Anyway, I go to the recommendations up top, and each one of them forces me to watch an ad before I can listen. OR! I can upgrade to Pandora Premium and not be bothered by that shit. But I am paying them, already.

Apparently, the issue is that I'm paying only for "Pandora Plus with ad-free stations." If you want anything more than that you have to upgrade. Just like all products have shrunk, the services I've come to love are really starting to piss me off.

@briankrebs Pandora is preventing me from paying them as I live In The Wrong Country, but for the time I could use them, https://github.com/PromyLOPh/pianobar was the best interface by far.

@briankrebs #enshittification seems appropriate hashtag here then.
@briankrebs I use youtube music, and it may be better at figuring out my taste, but my daughter also listens to my youtube music, so it thinks I enjoy listening to Taylor Swift and the Descendants soundtrack way more than I actually do...
@briankrebs I think @somafm is on Sonos now. Might be worth a look.
@Holir_ @somafm REALLY? I used to listen to that station nonstop.
@briankrebs @Holir_ @somafm I'm guessing you're not an Android user but for anyone that is I like this app a lot
@Holir_ @somafm omg i just added it as a new station via url. so cool. thank you!
@Holir_ @somafm Secret Agent stream is pretty great too. https://ice.somafm.com/secretagent
@briankrebs @somafm that station fits well with your profile picture as well.
@briankrebs Enshittification at work again 😕
@briankrebs May I suggest my 19yo instead? It turns out that she introduces me to a lot of music I like. (We’ve been going on long drives and playing each other songs ever since the pandemic started.)

@briankrebs they all have to generate that shatholder value...
@briankrebs I am trying to get off of Spotify. The playlists I listen to, are more or less only on spotify, and I haven’t found a way to stop the subscription for my partner without her getting mad over it. 😅 Love the suggestions in the thread though, going to listen to SomaFM.
@briankrebs With the change in interest rates, the enshittification of literally everything is bespoke, so there's probably never been a better time to hoist the 🏴‍☠️ flag and start curating your own media library -- if for no other reason than to avoid the hassle of figuring out who the current license holder is and whether or not you've paid for access to that content tier.

@briankrebs Before long, the new default will be to play your local music collection off your hard drive or locally-hosted music server.

It kind of makes me feel vindicated that while buying my music in lossless DRM-free formats this whole time, I wasn't actually being stubborn, I was a visionary!

@briankrebs I think I listen to more hours of Pandora than anything else. I have a bunch of stations, I start a new one once or twice a year. It’s on in my office when I’m working and in the rest of the house when I’m not.
@briankrebs i pay the same level as you do. my method for pandora is pick what to listen to on the app on phone, may need to watch ad. then redirect to sonos via icon in lower right corner, airplay maybe? anyway gets it there, tho does seem to have more network issues than it should.
