@gfarrell also worker ownership of the means of production, and democracy in the workplace. 😀

Socialism isn't free stuff. Its getting what you paid for with your taxes rather than giving it away to corporate subsidies.
@gfarrell Socialism bans corporations and private ownership of the means of production. Hopefully who is the person who is supposed to manage the means of production isn't some greedy megalomaniac
@gfarrell @leon no, it doesn’t. It encourages it. To pay taxes to support people who need it.
You can still be very wealthy in a socialist society. The bonus is people don’t die of starvation or lack of healthcare.
@Kirsty @gfarrell I thought that was what social liberalism was all about, contributing to a society to make sure everybody has a chance to live a healthy life.
@gfarrell I agree with the sentiment but taxes are a statist concept which libertarian socialists deplore.

@heydon @gfarrell "Libertarian socialists"? 🤔
How do you combine those two?

(Now, one of the things I like about living in a social democracy, is the fact that it's a system like that that actually leads to more freedom. But that doesn't make it libertarian.)

@havn @gfarrell The term "libertarian" was coined by a FRENCH COMMUNIST. The libertarianism you hear mostly about now is a co-opted version used by right wing corporate lobbyists seeking deregulation (liberty) for corporations. But make no mistake, libertarianism belongs, rightfully, to the left.
@havn @gfarrell We talk about Right and Left (I did just now!) like they're meaningful designations but they amount to little more than "White" versus Asian. The real division is between those who believe in hierarchy and those who don't. Some Libertarians believe in freedom for the powerful (pro hierarchy) and some Libertarians believe in the dissolution of that hierarchy. I know which side I am on.
@gfarrell Yeah, there are a lot of misconceptions about all kinds of "ism's". Another example is Anarchism, which Stephen West explains pretty well in his latest podcast: https://www.philosophizethis.org/podcast/anarchism-part-one
