The step-by-step, mechanical logic of old pinball machines

YouTube
@TechConnectify Yay! Your videos are always a treat!
@TechConnectify Visible logic action is extremely cool.
@TechConnectify been looking forward to this one
@TechConnectify Everyone gather round! The old man has a new story for us
@TechConnectify I've been looking forward to part 2 of this; Silly question, but did you buy that table yourself? It's in amazing condition, and I'm so happy you're showing us around it.
@TechConnectify Oh I noticed that circular thing with brass contacts in the 1st relat and wondered what it was. How come they did that one like that rather than the PCB style that the other counters are done in?

@penguin42 Honestly have no idea. May have been dwindling parts supplies as they transitioned from EM to solid-state (there are also weird inconsistencies in the machine re: what the devices are called and what is screen-printed on the PCB).

But it could also have been different needs. The bonus unit is wire point-to-point on the other side and thus may be more flexible.

@penguin42 @TechConnectify could the need to run bulbs put it over what they were happy with over a PCB?
@[email protected] I am saving this and the other one to see later, thanks for your glorious work

Friendly and helpful, if strongly opinionated.

@TechConnectify I love these in-depth videos, as does my dog Bean.

@TechConnectify behind the scenes question: What is it you do after failed takes in the bloopers? Do you have a button wired up to set an edit point in the recording? Reset a clock?

Great video and series btw!

@mk @TechConnectify He resets the teleprompter (most probably).
@alpatron ahh, that makes sense. Thanks.

@TechConnectify The stepper PCBs are almost jarring to see in this thing that looks like it was built from coathanger wire and plywood. I appreciate the amount of work put into it, but I also appreciate its barbarian aesthetic, the bits of handwriting, bare soldering- it makes you imagine the whole factory just looking at it.

They reminded me of gray-code rotary encoders like you'd see on a multimeter's main switch, but it's far too detached in construction and purpose to call it a Technology Connection.

@TechConnectify I was confused as all git through the whole thing but still somehow ended up understanding it. Great video.
@TechConnectify Early for New Year's (obv) but I've decided that in 2024, I'm going to reply to video creators when they post videos just letting them know that I appreciate what they do and that watching their output brings me a few moments of enjoyment. I see the video get posted and look forward to the 20-40 minutes of gentle enjoyment which I'll get. So, thanks.
@TechConnectify You really should've called this series: "As The Score Motor Turns" and leaned into the soap opera angle
@TechConnectify Let me start with Thank you. Every detail, every nuance, every thought put into this. So very, very happy again. Also, could you break down some of the items on those sales ads like the plug-in heating device, etc. You know the ones that start with
"This 18-year-old kid found a loophole and quit MIT " to share it with the world and you can circumvent - insert issue here ___ heating cost, cooling costs, etc. Powerslave, optimus wall plug to name a few.
@TechConnectify Watching both the previous video and this one left me with one major takeaway: That thing would not get UL certified. All that arcing, right near a ton of wood, paper, and fabric (!) insulated wire is a recipe for an electrical fire. (Just like grandma used to make it.)
@TechConnectify Great video! I noticed that there was one part where you tried to move the subtitles to a different part of the screen but did it in a way that left a black box that extends down from the line. The fix is pretty easy so I've already done it (among a couple other minor changes), but I didn't know where I could provide a fixed version of the subtitles. Is it fine posting them here or is there a better way to share them?
@TechConnectify
A good chunk of your German audience is on #37C3 right now, I wonder if this is a visible dent in the statistics?
@TechConnectify cheers A-dog, that's swood
@TechConnectify Just wanted to say, really enjoying your videos. Never thought about the workings of a pinball machine, but as a result of watching your videos, I now really want one. It's really fascinating to see how technology has changed in the last few decades. Keep up the good work!

@TechConnectify
Looking forward to Episode 3.

What a wonderfully complex machine.
