US Update based on #COVID19 in wastewater:

▪️ 1 of every 29 Americans is now infectious.
▪️ A room with 20 people is likely to include someone with COVID.
▪️ COVID is spreading more than during 95% of the pandemic.
▪️ We'll see 2M new infections daily before this peaks in two weeks.
▪️ We're adding between 600,000 and 2.3M new cases of Long COVID each week.
▪️ We could now be in the 2nd-worst surge of the pandemic. (We won't know for a week or two due to data lags.)

Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative - COVID-19 Data Dashboard

@augieray Sadly even the enlightened have been caught in the anti-vax cult, in practice.

Here in Toronto, my condo had a simultaneous flu/COVID clinic (one in each arm).

So, I'm pleased to still be able to protect myself so easily (and without cost).

@augieray

It is going to get ugly out there thanks to our collective stubbornness and stupidity.

We traveled by plane with less than 5 % of the people masked including the two flight attendants figuring out how they would get cold medicine in btw flights “ I just need to make it through tomorrow’s flights and then I’ll test”

@augieray Long COVID seems scarier to me than the basic COVID.

Is Aotearoa doing enough not to follow suit? When will Luxon and Reti be holding 1pm media briefings? When will yellow and black diagonally striped posters appear? Or are we going to be like England this time?

@augieray

Perhaps consider moderating your plans for New Year’s Eve and take steps to mitigate the increased risk of infection during this outbreak.

@augieray

Soon, there will be two people in the same room that have Covid and have the same birthday.

@augieray This week is a personal all time shock of people known and second hand reporting illness'. An array: 'atypical' covid, GI covid, Norovirus, RSV, Flu, even shingles and scarlet fever. It is astonishing already how many are so sick, debilitated level.

Maybe folks are talking about health more or the stories are more magnified because the illness caused big plans to be disrupted - so perhaps people are talking more openly because they lost health and plans they'd looked forward to both, but the sheer volume astounds.

To think gatherings lately and soon ahead will ensure an increase staggers the mind. So many I know, and know of, have already been hit by something the past 10 days.

This seems like a worse year/wave of illnesses than ever from my brief vantage point. Kinda bracing for what the numbers are and will be when the hard data emerges.

@augieray What is the hospital situation like? (I.e. are the vaccines making it less deadly?)
@PlaneSailingGames vaccines are making it less deadly, and there's evidence it might also reduce the chance of Long COVID. Still, vaccine effectiveness fades. We need to do more than just rely on vaccines.
@augieray I have it for my first time. Fully vaccinated, so it feels like a bad cold. I’d started to relax about it, didn’t want to be that guy in the mask at the Ohio turnpike reststop before Christmas. So I got a little present from a stranger.
@markwedel Hope you recover quickly and fully.
