Guys, Amazon deforestation is down 50% this year!

It's worth saying twice: Amazon deforestation is down 50% this year!!!!!!! 2023 was also the best year ever for reforestation and carbon reduction! We're doing it! We're really doing it! #ShareGoodNewsToo

@adapalmer I actually needed this. Thanks!
@adapalmer Remove an autocrat, save the world!
@adapalmer I really appreciate you sharing this! It's nice to smile about something.
@adapalmer Thank you for posting this. I too often only see negative stories shared on here, and it's important that we not lose hope. Because hope is still very much alive.

@thegardendude @adapalmer

I hear you — and I have a couple suggestions for counteracting that:

Good News app (they are funded by donations) https://apps.apple.com/de/app/good-news-app/id1321856447?l=en-GB

Daily Climate Good News https://www.dailyclimate.org/good-news/

and I have cut my consumption of doomer mass media to a minimum. Helps my sanity.

Hope that helps!

@adapalmer
Yes!!!
Thank you for sharing this good news!

I wish I could celebrate with you, but afraid it's a red herring.

I don't know what's to celebrate about losing 9'000 km2 of primary rain forest as we cross the tipping point of turning half a continent into a savanna. We're not doing it yet.

@KarlHeinzHasliP Yeah, the good news is they ousted climate denying fascists who were actively trying to burn the rainforest down, but it is kinda like avoiding a car crash by first putting the engine in neutral instead of flooring the gas pedal.
@adapalmer Thanks, Lula. Unfortunately, #Argentina has bought into the MAGA myth hook, line, and sinker. Hopefully, they'll get rid of him before he does too much damage.
@adapalmer okay but like a lower rate of deforestation is still negative forestation not reforestation.
@earthshine reducing is better than doing the opposite, no?

@adapalmer I'm wary of anything that comes out of Reuters since they partnered with the Russian gov

UPDATE: esp an "exclusuve". esp by a Jake "Spring" and Matt "Finer" and by a private analysis given to Reuters by a group never heard of. its not impossible tbe story is legit but I see 6 indicia combined to be wary about. Russian disinfo ops worldwide are insidious and feature certain telltales

@adapalmer

Um yes, this is good news. And it shows that politics works - it's because of Lula having succeeded Bolsonara.

But let's get real. The Amazon is still being deforested. Just a bit more slowly.

It's not something to celebrate. Things getting worse more slowly is still things getting worse.

@adapalmer Damn, I needed some good news today. Gonna read this. Thanks!!
@jjfphd If you’re craving good news, search for “Future Crunch”
They do roundups of underreported good news. It’s incredibly fortifying realizing how much is actually going well. China passed 50% renewable energy, the giant ocean conservation treaty was the real deal, poverty is down 2/3rds globally since 2000, polio eradication close, malaria vaccine rollout; 2023 was a great year globally on many metrics, but most news doesn’t let us feel it.

@adapalmer Thank you!!

2024 is going to be a year I cultivate hope. Because my despair leads to inaction, and inaction only benefits people who are invested in the status quo.

So I asked myself, who does my despair serve? And when I thought of it that way, hope was really the only option.

I appreciate this resource!

@jjfphd That's a great resolution for us all!
@jjfphd @adapalmer Yup, time for that hopey changey goodness again!
@jjfphd @adapalmer
Dreams come true is you focus on gratitude and the feeling it gives you like it's happened.

@adapalmer @jjfphd Reasons to Be Cheerful is another one I like, with The Progress Network and Positive News Publishing as two newer additions to my inbox.

None of which negates the bad news, of course! But it isn't the whole story, either.

@swan_tower @adapalmer @jjfphd There is also the monthly Positive Leftist News videos on YouTube.
Future Crunch

Stories of progress from around the world.

@adapalmer @graydon @jjfphd “Humanity will install an astonishing 413 GW of solar this year, 58% more than in 2022, which itself marked an almost 42% increase from 2021. That means the world's solar capacity has doubled in the last 18 months, and that solar is now the fastest-growing energy technology in history. In September, the IEA announced that solar photovoltaic installations are now ahead of the trajectory required to reach net zero by 2050...”
@adapalmer I love Future Crunch! Aside from a monthly (?) free version they have a more frequent paid version ($50) where they donate something like half of that to well-deserved groups doing great work. This subscription is my go to gift for friends who don’t need anymore “stuff”. #goodnews

@adapalmer @jjfphd "Poverty is down", in large part because of mobing the goalposts of what gounts as poverty.

The number of people in nutritional deficit has risen considerably since 2008.

China technically has >50% of installed fixed-point electricity generation capacity comprised of lower carbon sources (renewable + nuclear), but the most recent figures I've seen show thatbonly about 1/4 of actual generation is from renewable + nuclear, with well over 50% still coming from coal.

https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/chinas-installed-non-fossil-fuel-electricity-capacity-exceeds-50-total-2023-06-12/

China's installed non-fossil fuel electricity capacity exceeds 50% of total

China's non-fossil fuel energy sources now exceed 50% of its total installed electricity generation capacity, state media outlet Xinhua said on Monday, citing an official at state planner the National Reform and Development Commission.

@adapalmer its amazing what left-wing policies and leadership can do compared to Bolsonaro.

@adapalmer

That explains why they are selling a lower pctage of books this year.

@adapalmer Grumpy old bastard here. OK a reduction in destruction is a small step in the right direction but I'll save the celebrations until we end each year with more mature forest than we had the year before.
@pthane If trends continue we won’t have many years to wait for that. Here’s hoping!
@adapalmer 'Mature' forest. Going to take a while. Cutting down forest that's taken hundreds of years to develop and planting saplings isn't a quick fix.
@adapalmer Really good news. Worth saying, too, that it's been achieved due to political change in Brazil and the reinforcement of indigenous movements everywhere.
So it's twice good news: Together we can do nice big things, and we must keep doing, even if sometimes it seems we're loosing the planet. We're not.
