@ThePlant I'm not locked in with you, your are locked in with me
@ThePlant they’re considering making it opt in I don’t think this is gonna happen
@ThePlant You have drawn incorrectly: the interior of the horse is #Meta and the city is the #Fediverse

@ThePlant the number of people, especially on Lemmy, but also here, who think this is Embrace extend extinguish in the fediverse is fascinating. There's a "historical document" going around claiming that Google killed the entire xmpp protocol by stopping interconnection with Google talk. Of course, it completely whitewashes over the fact that xmpp was utterly shit as well.

I'm going to be honest, did embrace extend extinguish ever actually work??

@cpw @ThePlant so is activitypub, tbh. at least as led by mastodon.

eee works, but usually not by conscious effort, just by network effect. like, the reason google "killed" xmpp was because a lot of people started using the chat client in their webmail.

@ThePlant

given that the few consider the masses to be 'a market' to be targeted I fear that the corruption from mainstream social media will inevitably flow into the fediverse. Tbh, it's already here, it's just not so obvious.

#threads

@ThePlant Funny story, my brother managed to have me create an instagram account just to get thread.

So after finalising the thing and reading "soon into the fediverse", i just realised i lost half an hour for nothing as i could just start to follow him and others from here.

I have an instagram to delete now.

@ThePlant At first I thought you have mixed up 'Threads' and 'Fediverse' :D
@ThePlant My instance monitored threads and then they decided to block them after the first 24 hours because of their lack of moderation. I really hope your way of thinking about it works. So far it looks not good. But well. If they end up isolated… well i do not care as long as i can be safe from… this… people… whatever.
@ThePlant This is the best thing I've seen related to the Threads situation.

@ThePlant If current moderation practices in the fedi hold, the only servers that Meta will be able to federate with will be the transphobe nazi freeze peach and other associated nastiness, since Meta won't moderate anti-trans or white supremacist accounts in their own platform.

Whether mastodon.social cuts them off will be the biggest barometer, but many smaller servers have either defederated preemptively or had to cut them off anyway after their "wait and see" phase.

@ceremus @ThePlant Issue with that: fedi would then be interpreted as a toxic dumpster fire to general audiences

Facebook can now turn this around, and say that those instances are the majority.
If facebook is doing what I'm thibking, this is going to be bad.

@Crystals FWIW I doubt that Meta would have Threads federate with servers heavily populated with nazis or actively trading in CSAM, even they're smart enough to know that's not tenable for their platform. What they're actually good at is keeping people siloed together with content they want to see. For me it'll be the question of whether the mega instances like mastodon.social, Universeodon, etc. acquiesce to be what Meta wants, or they take T&S moderation seriously when Meta fails at it.
@ThePlant I think the main point is that normal people who want to go into the fediverse choose threads because they trust Meta more than someone selfhosting it
