Now would be a good time for instance admins to clearly communicate with people on their instances about some things:

1. Are they going to block Threads?

2. Are they going to defederate from instances that do not block Threads?

3. When? How much time do people have to move accounts before they potentially lose contact with their friends?

Whatever you plan to do as an admin, please communicate your plan to your instance community.

The sooner, the better.

#Threads #Fediverse

Mind you, I am not arguing one way or another here. That's a much larger, much more complicated conversation.

The only thing I am saying here is:

1. Please have a plan, even a simple one.

2. Please inform people on your instance of that plan, so that they can make informed choices before potential defederations make moving accounts impossible.

Also, thank you for all your hard, thankless work, fedi admins and moderators! I know it's not easy, and I appreciate it a lot.

@rysiek and all users at all instances should ASAP export their contact lists of following and followed because someone - even on other server - can make one of these decisions and cut your communication with friends...
@rysiek I've read plenty about 1 but seen 2 rarely mentioned. Is there any... article or thread about the pros and cons of 2?

@rysiek

1) Done in july, domain and subnets already blocked.

2) No. Their freedom must be respected as mine.

3) Already done in july and announced to the community. They had all the time to decide and migrate, but they are free to do it anytime.

@rysiek I think you've read ours right?
@stux not sure. Can you link?

It's time to address the elephant in the room, or actually Threads As many of you may know Threads went live in Europe and with that they started testing federation with the Fediverse At this point there is a choice to make 1. Block Threads on instance level, that will take away the choice for each person 2. Do not block and let people block if they want to(1 search and 2 clicks) After much consideration and talks I think we need to go with option 2 and let people decide for themselves

@rysiek agree 100%. Maybe @JohanEmpa has done it already, I have been somewhat distracted.

@rysiek

Unfortunately, I am seeing this as the end of the Fediverse.

If getting in bed with Meta is not the end of the Fediverse, the split over whether or not to get in bed with Meta will be the end.

Let's face it whatever the actual details, most people who are here have come here to get away from the likes of Zuckerberg and Musk. Letting the camel's nose under the tent is not going to improve things in my estimation.

@MylesRyden that's a longer and more nuanced conversation that I don't have the mental space for now.

But let me say this: I honestly don't know why you feel you need to use emotionally charged language like "getting in bed with Meta". Some instances will block Threads. Some won't. Cool. People can make decisions and move instances. Also cool.

You don't want it, make sure you're on an instance that blocks it. 🤷‍♀️

I encourage you to share your thoughts on the above in your own thread, thanks. 👍

@rysiek
Gee, I am sorry I am not smart enough for you. I'll crawl back into my hole now.
@rysiek Yes, the owner of my instance, ieji.de, has blocked threads.
@rysiek Also of note: If they *aren't* going to block users over Threads, that users can do so on an individual basis, if they'd like to...

@rysiek heh

  • already done that as soon as the domain name was known
  • no; AIUI I don’t need that because @gotosocial always works in “authorised fetch” mode, so no data and few metadata can be communicated to Fakebook
  • @rysiek I'm trying to come up with an answer to this question, and failing:

    Why would an instance *pro-actively* block / defererate Threads, when we individuals can already do so for ourselves? (Which I have done).

    (What am I missing?)

    @rysiek I haaaaardly believe 2 is even on the table for most of them. That would be a bit much
    @rysiek Well, thankfuly as I host my own instance for myself, I don't feel a burden of decision that much. I will not block them for now, mostly because I'm curious how will it all work...

    @rysiek I am the only person on this instance, so it's simple:

    No blocking.
    No defederating.
    I will do absolutely nothing.

    @rysiek better still, first ask your users what they want you to do - and do it.
    That will at least minimise the number of refugees who don't agree with the majority and then decide to change instance.
    On my instance we had a poll and the decision was not to federate with Threads and threads.net is suspended.
    So we can stand on the sidelines and see how it develops.
    But on a personal note if we do eventually federate then I'm off.
