F-Droid has made a lot of progress in recent years. I had for the last 5 years a Huawei phone. As a challenge to myself to get rid of Google, and it has never been so easy. It has some incredible apps (my favourite is Organic maps). Most apps on F-Droid require min Android 5 or 6. And you can get Aurora store there which is frontend to google play store without google play.
