This was captured with the Rodenstock 70mm/5.6 HR Digaron-W lens, which provides a large image circle and ample room for movements. The lens was swung to force everything except a thin column where WTC is in the frame out of focus. A polarizer and ND filter darkened the sky and blurred moving traffic.

One WTC's unusual geometry means the light catches it differently throughout the day; it almost seems to change shape. This capture emphasizes the triangular shape on the building's south side.

The new WTC presents some challenges to photograph from within its environment. It's easy to show its dominance in the skyline - just shoot from New Jersey or Brooklyn. But here I wanted to show its relationship to its surroundings. No matter where you are in the neighborhood, nearby buildings loom taller in the frame. But WTC still stands out for the way it has a portion of the sky all to itself. The use of selective focus helps emphasize that.
I made a lot of captures over the course of several hours. I originally rejected this one for having an uninteresting sky, but later decided that the two bisecting contrails were a fitting reminder of the fate of the building's predecessor.
I don't think it's possible, as a member of my generation and especially as a New Yorker, to look at the new WTC and not have "this is the place where that terrible thing happened" looming in the background. I suspect this is true even for people not yet born then. We won't be able to see this as just another skyscraper, to accept or reject on its own terms, for at least another generation.

@mattblaze My son is aware of the history and has watched numerous documentaries, but he always seems perplexed by my expression of what the event means to me. I’m certain he doesn’t connect with it beyond the words and facts. I think this is rue of other past events and generations, too. His kids might not even learn about it beyond seeing the memorial and wondering what all the fuss was about. What’re those weird square fountains, gramps…?
