Edit: So apparently this is a legit gen 1 wallet. I didn’t realise they only added Find My later…

Review: Apple’s updated MagSafe wallet is visually identical but hides wonderful new features - 9to5Mac

I loved the original MagSafe wallet that Apple introduced last year alongside the iPhone 12, but it was missing something...

@Nickjsaunders Yes, I am an idiot!
@jamesthomson Same thing happened to me when I bought a discounted wallet off Woot — only reason I know 😅

@jamesthomson there was a version of the wallet that came out before that feature was supported.

There was a physical change to it.

It’s probably just part of that original run when they didn’t support it for 6 months.

@idyll Yes, that’s it, I was wrong!

@jamesthomson it’s actually pretty annoying that they did it and packaged them the same.

I don’t think there is any visible indication if it supports find my or not.

I’d keep it though. The new fabric is no where near as durable as leather.

@dmoren Or a Gen 1 wallet apparently, I didn’t remember they didn’t do Find My.
@jamesthomson @dmoren as someone who’s lost a Find My wallet, I didn’t find that functionality very useful.
@jamesthomson The very first round of those wallets didn’t have the Find My support.
@chrisdejabet Yes, that’s it, I was wrong!
@jamesthomson I don’t think it’s a fake. The first version of the wallet didn’t support Find My https://www.macrumors.com/2021/09/23/hands-on-apple-find-my-magsafe-wallet/
Hands-On With Apple's New Find My-Enabled MagSafe Wallet

Alongside the iPhone 13 models, Apple introduced a new version of the MagSafe Wallet that first came out last year. This updated version includes...

@jack_regan Yes, that’s it, I was wrong!
@jamesthomson I genuinely think this is just a gen 1 wallet.
@chadmobley @jamesthomson I concur. My original MagSafe wallet did not have find my features.
@jamesthomson It's really a bit confusing that only the second generation supports Find My:
"There are two models of iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe. The models that are compatible with Find My are in the following colors: Umber, Forest Green, Ink, Dark Cherry, Midnight, Golden Brown, Sequoia Green, Wisteria, and Orange."
@tom_t_21 Apparently the first gen were only around six months as well.
@jamesthomson The earlier MagSafe wallets didn't support FindMy, maybe it's one of those?
@jamesthomson it is so fake it immediately caused my AirTags to start giving expired battery warnings as soon as I read your post.
@jamesthomson there are fakes that do support that. you got a bad/cheap fake 🥲
@jamesthomson I bought the new one in September because my gen 1 leather version didn’t support Find My.
In addition to the weird texture, it’s somewhat annoying. Find My for the wallet is really just “notice when it is detached”. If it moves after being detached, you won’t find it.
@jamesthomson I have a gen 1 wallet, I don’t use mine enough to buy another until it supports precision finding and not just detachment.

@jamesthomson Apple’s wallet “Find My” support is sub-par anyway, at least as far as I understand it. They just record where the wallet was last detached.

ESR has a bulkier but neat wallet with proper “Find My” support. https://www.esrgear.com/products/halolock-geo-wallet-stand/ Worth checking out.

@kirsch Thanks!
@jamesthomson if you did end up getting it, I’m actually curious how you like it.
@kirsch I haven’t yet, somewhat derailed by covid. But will consider it!
@jamesthomson can you return it and treat it as a lesson learned?
