I had an interesting conversation this morning with a homeless guy. Employed, but not enough to pay rent. Clean and well dressed. Talked with justifiable pride, I think, about the system he has set up. A gym membership to stay clean and healthy. A locker to store his tent and gear during the day.

Talked about how violent the shelter system is.

It’s a deep cruelty that in a land of such abundance we deny basic necessities to people.

@PapyrusBrigade Western civilization was, is, and always will be, shit. The answer to Fermi's paradox is that all those who did not destroy themselves learned that stability and happiness rather than growth and koyaanisqatsi was the key, and they never looked to the stars.
@PapyrusBrigade there’s a woman I’ve spoken with in Augusta a number of times. Took care of her mom for 20 years, when she passed her siblings sold the house.
The only thing she has is her mom’s dog. She can’t even go into a shelter because they don’t allow dogs. She literally gave up her life to be a caretaker. There’s nothing for her, even when she can get SS it won’t be enough to live on.
@PapyrusBrigade my stepdaughter is working with a group of homeless people and they told her that the two things they want: storage units to stash their belongings so they can apply for jobs and that the city empties the trash near them because other people leave trash all around them.
@PapyrusBrigade too true, in Denver many people prefer the streets to being basically strip searched for drugs every afternoon before being locked into an overcrowded room all night being constantly vigilant to defend yourself against random psychos beating the shit out of you or getting robbed or raped by people the cops refuse to arrest every morning because homeless crimes against other homeless people aren't worth their time.
@PapyrusBrigade
We’re noticing it more in Australia. Families camping in tents long term, struggling to stay in one place to keep kids in school.

@PapyrusBrigade Thank you for sharing.

I’ve read this article almost a year ago, and hope this solution spreads to help more homeless people.
