HP misreads room, awkwardly brags about its “less hated” printers

Opinion: HP's printer business practices have infuriated users for years.

Ars Technica
@arstechnica At least they’re acknowledging that they *are* hated?

@MichaelPorter

"Yellow LED without labeling blinks and nothing happens"

@Gonzo Well, see, there you have to read the manual; which is conveniently located on some third-party manual download site because your printer is two years old and we’re not interested in supporting that old junk

@arstechnica 😆

That ship sailed, HP. They even couldn't pay me to use their stuff anymore.

@0x575446 @arstechnica > same here, years ago had to replace an onboard DVD-CD player, couldn't find it anywhere on their parts listing for that HP model laptop. Customer service "Well we do not list all the generic replacement products we use" Oh reeeeally!! , ..bye ... 😡..and that was the end for me, been a while since most don't have them, (CD players) today or we use them onboard now. 🤔🤔🤔😒😒
@arstechnica my printer recently died and I basically was open to anything but another HP because of their business practices. So far the new printer has worked fine. My world hasn't ended by switching from HP.
@arstechnica
De-enshittification... The process where you've pushed your customers too far, no one will buy your garbage anymore, and you actually have to start making *slightly* better products in the hope that you can continue to keep fleecing customers.
@pluralistic
@arstechnica Got rid of my last HP printer a few years ago. Trying to lock people into buying vastly overpriced proprietary ink. Yeah, no. Couple that with low price and low quality printers to maximize profits even more.
@arstechnica That's not an opinion, that's a fact
@arstechnica Also, no, I love my HP printer, and I would 1000% buy another. Also, never buy inkjets; buy lasers. HP makes one of the best printers money can buy...
@ogg @arstechnica
I too love my HP printer, a twenty year old laserjet 4100. They built them to last in those days.
We did buy another, a 5100 to do A3 duplexing, (it's a bit big for domestic use but could stand in for a coffee table) but I wouldn't buy any of the current generation.
The weak point is the jetdirect cards, but so far we've been able to nurse them along by gently cooking them when they fail.
@Doire @arstechnica I have HP Color LaserJet Pro Multifunction M479fdw and it's build quality is just as good as the 4100's and its networking is fantastic, AirPrint works great and I can scan and fax from my Mac
@ogg @Doire @arstechnica same here. I would never buy a HP inkjet printer, but I don’t hate the laser printers I bought from them.
@microtherion @Doire @arstechnica agreed, however I would also expand on this, never by inkjet printers from anyone, they all SUCK, if you can't afford a color laser there are lots of options monochrome lasers, however never buy from brother, as brother will charge you for repair on new printers they ship broken. Personal experience. NEVER BROTHER.
@microtherion @Doire @arstechnica Sorry, I will add some more details, as I do use several shops that use "ink jets" for my photos that I have taken on a Mirrorless Camera. my advice is for the regular everyday users.
@arstechnica Maybe if they say it often enough it will become true…?
@arstechnica I would never, in a million years buy an #HP #printer. Specially not an #inkjet printer. HP is an evil company and needs to go fuck itself.
@arstechnica this was on purpose. It's called gaslighting.
@arstechnica still won't buy any HP product. I turfed my HP printer years ago. Replacement from a competitor and cost a lot less and the supplies are a LOT cheaper and they don't play games if I use 3rd party supplies.
@arstechnica also the machine worked in Linux without any problems unlike my former HP printer.
@thomastraynor @arstechnica Curious to know what you’re using.
@rheldt Brother inkjet and laser. I don't use the laser very much, just when I need a high quality B&W print. Inkjet is good enough for 95% of my printing needs.
@arstechnica I can honestly say I hate them the most lol. HP can rot in a shallow grave
@arstechnica It's axiomatic that "Friends don't let friends buy HP printers".
@arstechnica HP's least hated printers still rank lower than "Satan's unwashed perineum after a week-long bout with chunky incontinent sinnerrhea" on a list of things I would like to exist in the same universe with.
@arstechnica Last time I have a "less hated" HP printer was a 1018 😬
@arstechnica brother gang assemble!
@tomflack Bear in mind that Brother has some firmware now that locks you into using their toner. They can only be counted as truly less hated now.
@arstechnica I bought a Brother laser #printer a while ago and would happily buy another next time. I won’t buy another HP printer. Absolutely not.
@arstechnica Just bought. BROTHER. what took me so long? HP never again
@arstechnica man they should look at customer satisfaction of HP vs Brother, before choosing that particular tack…
@arstechnica > Only decent HP printer used for years, working with various companies, not related to each other but used same printer. At the time ONLY one could find reasonably priced for 'in the field' was the 5650 HP as we needed easy to use 'on board' banner printing for our logs to be given to 'higher ups' with our Daily Report. They eventually bought them 'pieces parts' on E bay ( repair-replacement) for a while till they finally got too outdated to use.
@arstechnica
Simplified mud log example on the 5650 HP printer. Everything is plotted against depth ( by hand) Gama (blue), ROP ( rate of penetration) at a given ( vertical) depth (green), shale and sand percentages at a given depth, yellow (SD) grey (shl) in lithology area. Total gas seen at given depth ( red) and chromatographic breakdown of the total gas ( far right) Methane, Ethane, Propane, iso Butane, Normal butane etc...
@arstechnica > The kick-off blue line on log (GAMA) to the left ( facing) is lower resistivity in sand areas in real-time downhole tools pulsing signals to the surface instruments from tools in hole drilling.
@arstechnica HP can go "PC LOAD LETTER" as far as I'm concerned.
@arstechnica less hated, haha. I’m never touching a HP product again. As for printers, my Brother is one of the best pieces of hardware I have.

@arstechnica There was a time where buying an HP printer was a smart move: directly supported on most OSes, using documented standards, not relying on proprietary software.
This is long gone.
I sometimes wonder if those ink programs make financial sense, but with reported margins growing: no, definitively not.

Never buy a product that’s proud to lock you in, if you can avoid it.

(That’s kind of funny to be typed on an Apple device. 🙄 Good thing I can avoid buying printers…)
