It's time for an #abolition thread. We’ve had a couple of relevant stories in the news recently that are helping to create community safety so I wanted to highlight them in case you missed it. Remember, some factors which lead to unsafe communities are lack of economic stability, lack of access to food, lack of affordable housing, and no access to adequate and affordable medical care. 1/8

Governments try to address community instability caused by these factors by pouring police resources into the affected area, without addressing root causes of instability. And the police don’t have the skills to deal with root causes. Lack of sufficient economic resources is a huge community destabilizer. A solution advocated for almost two decades is Guaranteed basic income. 2/8

Some of you may remember that a young, first time mayor in Stockton CA experimented with guaranteed income. The experiment was a rousing success. Read about it here: https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2021/03/09/975009239/results-from-the-city-that-just-gave-away-cash.
Even Bloomberg News is covering the success of 20 programs around the country that now have data on the impact of their basic income programs. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-09-28/for-more-than-20-guaranteed-income-projects-the-data-is-in 3/8

And surprise! Contrary to the horrors of wasted money and refusal to work that conservatives envision, the plans have all stabilized housing, improved the physical and mental health of parents and their children. From Mastodon this week about a new guaranteed income project for Native American communities. That’s exciting! (lost link. If you know it...send in reply) The guaranteed income projects are happening throughout the world with Kenya and Finland being good overseas examples. #GuaranteedBasicIncome #MedicalDebt Another factor that causes economic instability is medical debt. There was a story last week of a woman, Casey McIntyre, who died from cancer but before doing so, created a fund to wipe out $60 million of medical debt. https://www.npr.org/2023/11/23/1215031473/before-dying-she-made-a-fund-to-cancel-others-medical-debt-now-60-million-worth 6/8

McIntyre worked with RIP Medical Debt, an organization dedicated to helping eliminate medical debt in the US. https://ripmedicaldebt.org/about/#mission The Biden administration is also working on an initiative that will provide relief from medical debt, including having it removed from a person’s credit score. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/09/21/1200834434/medical-debt-credit-score-cfpb-biden 7/8
Cleveland also is trying: https://www.clevescene.com/news/16000-clevelanders-have-had-33-million-in-medical-debt-wiped-out-by-new-partnership-43156668

When people have enough $ to stabilize housing, to eat, and to work at a livable wage with adequate child care, their communities will become safer and more stable. Guaranteed basic income, relief from medical debt and being freed from crippling credit scores will go a lot further towards creating a safe community than police with drones, encrypted radios and robot dogs. 8/8

@fulanigirl how do you think UBI programs will not succumb to parasitic capital? I mean by all means lets try UBI, but landlord's and other parasites extract as much as they can, because the pain the masses endure is often the point for them.

Desperate people find it difficult to organize.

@NoFlexZone Thanks for your comment. The #abolition thread has been running for a year now. It is not about a one size cures all solution to community safety. It focuses on how communities throughout the country are rethinking the various aspects of how capitalism, racism and oppression create conditions that hinder stability and safety. The costs of housing is one of many, many factors that contribute to instability.
