Google is shuttering google podcasts in favor of a youtube thing.

I don't want my podcasts on youtube.

Leave it to google to attempt to encapsulate podcasts.

@ajroach42 They wouldn't be the only one doing that though...

Its a pretty obvious step for the capitalists of our era!

@alcinnz of course they won't, and they aren't even the first.

But Google podcasts drives about half my podcast traffic right now, podcasts generally represent a threat to their bottom line, and now I have to find a way to make people care about listening to our material enough that they keep listening to it even after Google Podcasts breaks their existing subscription.

@ajroach42 ever heard of #RSS?

Back when #Podcasts meant scraping links of #MP3 files and shoving them on a player manually...

@kkarhan @ajroach42 it's slightly easier nowadays https://antennapod.org
AntennaPod – The Open Podcast Player

AntennaPod is a podcast player that is completely open. The app is open-source and you can subscribe to any RSS feed. AntennaPod is built by volunteers without commercial intere...

AntennaPod

@mapto @ajroach42 I know #AntennaPod for over a decade and it's a good option...

Maybe not as cool as #Overcast but still...

@ajroach42

Don't worry; in 3 or 6 years they'll shutter that, too. It's what they do.

@ajroach42 Interesting to think about, considering my own podcast is also available on Google podcasts, among many other places. Sigh.
@ajroach42
Remember, it's not a podcast if it's not on an RSS/Atom feed, and thus YouTube podcasts are just long videos.

@ddlyh

This is a good joke, but

Youtube channels can generate atom feeds, or at least they used to be able to.

What google is rolling out is apparently a way to import rss/atom feeds in to youtube as podcasts.

My bigger concern is for the google podcast app, which was, the last time I checked, the second most popular podcast client among my listeners.

@ddlyh @ajroach42

Shoutout to @peertube which includes RSS links built into interface on all channels/accounts, and these links are now compatible with podcast apps too.

@ajroach42 The podcasts interface on YouTube Music is at least better than on Google Podcasts, and you can add RSS feeds, but it's got a long way to go if it wants to lure me away from Podcast Republic, the best podcast app nobody ever talks about.
@ajroach42 I hate that every website is trying to become the only website you'll ever visit
