A few of us at @tudelft3d wrote a book about the computational aspects of terrain modelling 🏔️

We're been using it, and improving it with the help of the students, for a few years in the DTM course at TUDelft.

And we think it's ready to be used by others (BSc or MSc).

It's open-access and there are YouTube videos for many of the chapters: https://tudelft3d.github.io/terrainbook/

(the LaTeX source is on GitHub, PR for errors/typos are very much welcome!)

oh and while you are interested in the textbook, I have developed a Python package for the course to deal with TINs and interpolation.

It could also be of interest:

@hugoledoux @tudelft3d Hehe, "both the front and back cover images are generated by DALL·E 3". No wonder I thought the terrain on the cover didn't look very believably natural;)
@hugoledoux @tudelft3d This looks like a fantastic resource! As someone who has spent way too much time googling this, seeing all of it put together and with context is really great.
@hugoledoux @tudelft3d I haven't read yet, but this looks like it might be rather useful as I toy with the idea of building a procedural terrain mechanic. Thanks!
@hugoledoux @tudelft3d
Thanks for that. While the math is beyond me, the concept of terrain modelling is intriguing. i read several articles about it a few years back when I got Fractal Terrains and Campaign Cartographer programs to tinker with.
@hugoledoux @tudelft3d ooh, you give each sentence its own line! That's great for editing and PRs!

@hugoledoux ooh, that em dash vs en dash explanation might ne just what I was looking for! Thanks!
@hugoledoux @tudelft3d ... but where is the source?

@martinvermeer

there's a link on the website but that's the link: https://github.com/tudelft3d/terrainbook/

@hugoledoux OK thanks!
@hugoledoux Ah, I see. The links 'download latest PDF', 'LaTeX source' and 'YouTube videos' are somehow inaccessible at https://tudelft3d.github.io/terrainbook/. They become accessible when going to reader view. This is Firefox 119.0.1 on Ubuntu.
