The Japan SciCom Forum is being held today & tomorrow in Okinawa and I am boycotting 😐 BOYCOTTING!

My MORAL OUTRAGE is that—unlike previous meetings—there is no hybrid option (apparently blocked by the host institute). Since most participants will have to fly to Okinawa for a 2-day only meeting, I felt this was equivalent to declaring “climate change is fake news!”, not to mention accessibility considerations.

I feel strongly in-person only was the wrong call, but also sad not to be attending.

@elizabethtasker I think you made the right choice. Going back to pre-covid working styles would be giving up all the lessons we learned and the progress we made since then.
@doc 100% true. And there were the studies, such as the one published in Nat. Comms, showing how diversity in... basically everything, from geographical location to gender, exploded when you host online. I really don't think a science communication conference, of all things (!), should ignore that.
@elizabethtasker there are many good reasons to do hybrid (even with the disadvantages for the online crowd), and only one for not doing it: if you’re organizing a lecture just by yourself it might be too much to juggle.
