I don't love that they branded the key with the Windows Logo, but the addition of that key was actually a good idea I've come to believe. It's incredibly useful to have the idea of a modifier key reserved for the Operating System/Desktop Environment, for keyboard shortcuts specifically for OS functions (like lock screen and minimize all windows), but ctrl, alt, and shift are already commonly used for application shortcuts.
I've seen some keyboards where the Windows logo on that key was replaced by Tux the Penguin or the BSD Daemon.
@LiveByReason @floyduk I used to daily-drive an old AT keyboard way past the point when it was a good idea and yeah. The super key (as we can insist on calling it) is super useful. There are so many OS shortcuts I just do on autopilot.
This IBM Model M is one of two I have left from my dad's many original IBM PCs. This is my platonic ideal of how a keyboard should feel. So a few years ago I figured out how to use it on a modern PC - there's a little arduino thing you can buy or make. And now it's my keyboard again after all these years. I've bound the AltGr to be the windows key but I rarely use it.
@floyduk @LiveByReason Oh they feel lovely, no doubt. I love a Model M. I had one many years ago but a bunch of tech got chucked out in a move and I think it ended up on the wrong pile. The super key is good though. And being in Germany I need Alt Gr for other stuff. Still nostalgic for the Model M though and while I have a few mechs I've not found anything quite like it. If I had the funds and space for more keebs I'd be tempted by one of the modern USB repros.
@bill @LiveByReason I think you posted a Das Keyboard further up and those are REALLY nice. If I didn’t have 2 original model Ms I would be using a Das.
@floyduk @LiveByReason Thank you! It's my favourite. My wife bought it for me for my birthday about 10 years ago but I don't get to use it much these days because we share a computer and she likes printed keycaps.
