Wiley Hodges@KingShawn I do think there’s a compelling argument for this, but it’s about security rather than convenience. Phone as key mechanisms based on UWB are way more secure than conventional wireless key fobs that most cars are using today.

@KingShawn vehicle security. Too many conventional key fobs are vulnerable to replay attacks where thieves can record the signals and play them back. The precise distance measurement of UWB means that you can use time of flight for a signal to create a key that is insanely hard to spoof. There are numerous other protections in the standard, but this is a really big one.
@KingShawn I’ll add that the UWB-based key systems can even do clever things like distinguish between you walking toward your car and just walking past your car, and vary the unlocking behavior accordingly. It really is a better car key, not just a “let’s put everything in the phone” play.
