Migrating from Whatsapp/Messenger to @signalapp is a good thing and I encourage everyone to do it.

But Signal being centralised (on purpose to avoid complexity), we knew it was a temporary solution. That it was not sustainable. Some day, It will either enshitify or crumble under its own weight.

Turns out that day is closer than we think:

Time to prepare the future. What should we do ?

@ploum @signalapp The infrastructure cost is only 14 million of the 50 million grand total , though. 6 million of which (the « Registration Fees ») may also be unavoidable with another architecture.

@ploum @signalapp

Can't imagine any alternative for now. I was able to convert non-tech friends to signal, it seems the best move would be to fund them.

@ploum And what about RCS?

@froisois : not encrypted and with no privacy at all.

EDIT: don’t take my word. I remember reading that RCS messages could be intercepted exactly like SMS with a police warrant. But I may be wrong on this as I see people mentioning the opposite.

What about Olvid ? (https://olvid.io/fr/)
Already using it with only a few friends.
Not the best UI, but solid.

how about Simplex.chat?

it seems to tick all the boxes on privacy, by functioning without any sort of identity..

chatting without a strong selector (email address, phone number, etc.) may be considered freedom0 of communication protocols..?
