ICQ vs Teams. So very true. I'm probably going to have to get a new work computer with days of reconfig cos so much is not saved properly in our profiles cos Teams just Cannot Cope and is eating 97% of the RAM constantly even when not in a video call.

Image now ALT texted. I thought it was described but re-seeing my boost in timeline the image wasn't described, so can only assume I was having a stupid last night and you get this post instead.

@NatalyaD Teams is one of the most unoptimized apps that's widely used that I've ever seen. I use it occasionally for college, but I have to completely close out of it if I don't want it to affect my performance in games.

Zoom is way better in this regard, even if it is a privacy nightmare (though Teams isn't much better either).

@TempestDerg Basically yes to both of those points.

We have to use Teams for work, presumably cos while it's privacy sucks, our employer has signed up to that and it might be more secure than Zoom.

Teams has the Worst UI and I hate how I can't see the speaker and the slides as a deaf lipreader.

@NatalyaD If you have Office 365, Teams is included in most plans, which is why it got so wide adoption.
@NatalyaD this is what you get when web apps plus chrome are cosplaying as programs. The other day, I was thinking how much energy slack is wasting worldwide by just being a trash app
@aburtch @NatalyaD ICQ was the first (for me) chat platform for me ~25 years ago. And I'm not sure I've seen much else that is any better. I was #183127
@JoelFromNYC I tagged you because you were the one who introduced it to me. I remember being amazed at what it could do.
@NatalyaD So true. If you consider what the #software world has accomplished in the mean time, it almost feels like a giant #scam that just exists to waste the amazing increase in #hardware resources that has happened. I find the software world appalling now to be honest.
One important reason why I prefer to work in the #embedded world. Unfortunately, it seems to be sliding down a slope into the same quagmire as well...
@NatalyaD
I feel that most Microsoft stuff these days is just a random mess that's been slung together in a confusing blob of icons and tabs. It's like they have given up trying to actually design anything in favour of just throwing everything at the user at once. There you go, now fuck off.
@NatalyaD I still have my ICQ account. Should probably delete it for security reasons, but I am terribly nostalgic for my 7 digit account number
@lorewanderer I do too. I wonder what my password is...
@NatalyaD Work had to upgrade me to a MBP specifically because the Air couldn't handle teams. Crazy stuff.
@NatalyaD Well said. I'm routinely astounded by how, otherwise discerning, folk seem to tolerate Teams.
@NatalyaD I solved it by moving Teams to my iPad... Dunno if it'll work for everyone's use case but it does seem that having to work in a strict sandbox stops MS getting too baroque with memory…
@pandanus I have nothing else I'm allowed to put work stuff on and my personal desktop is 8yrs old (works fine for Linux, win 10 chokes a but even without teams).
@NatalyaD 💯💯💯💯😂
@NatalyaD At least the long fabled new version of Teams is modestly better performance wise. On the old one I swear any call made my poor work Mac Mini sound like a small plane.

@NatalyaD I miss ICQ. It was super simple to use.

Teams is a bloody mess, and I have to use it daily for work.

@NatalyaD I posted this in a channel and got "what's the flower logo" in reply 👴
@zanchey @NatalyaD Well I need to apologize here because I don't know the flower logo either, it seems great, pretty please?

@RachelC_Y @NatalyaD thanks for helping me to crumble to dust as the sands of time sweep around my legs

@zanchey @NatalyaD oh ICQ really? Is is still working? I used this when I was a baby engineer many many years ago (sorry).
@NatalyaD this isn't unique to Teams, but just about every electron-based application.
@gearlicious Don't worry, Teams is moving from Electron to … WebView2 (which is still Chromium, just a bit different).
@NatalyaD I'd have fewer complaints about the amount of RAM it uses if the interface wasn't so clunky and unresponsive.
@NatalyaD @piofthings 6099367 iirc

@bloor @piofthings 59285398...

Reminds me I also still know my late 90s compuserve id I think....

I've lost my memory skills tho. Used to know most of our family address book by heart....

@NatalyaD I remember ICQ it was amazing.
@NatalyaD pitty ICQ isn't making a comeback. Seems like a better platform in general
@jgavinray Yeah. I switched to Trillian for a while and then Pidgin but most of the IM services died and users stopped using them. We still use IRC and were playing with Thunderbird's IRC/chat client the other day as a "maybe last surviving least worst option".

@NatalyaD @ebooksyearn "The most amazing achievement of the computer software industry is its continuing cancellation of the steady and staggering gains made by the computer hardware industry."

@[email protected] heh. when my work required 'teams' i did this:

used pidgin (which is you know floss software kind of in the style of icq, and i use it anyway for personal communication via xmpp/jabber) with teams plugin for chats.

used web browser to connect to calls.

another useful tip: to get less nervous during calls open a soundclound set in another tab, and regulate its volume as necessary.

@NatalyaD ICQ was great. I still remember my UIN and sounds.
