#today I'm proposing a new word. Feel free to disagree with me on what it's called but I think we all recognise this thing.

Purfreesh (noun, singular)
[pɜ(ɹ)ːfɹiːʃ]

An item purchased, not because the purchaser wanted or needed it, but because its addition qualified the main purchase for free shipping.

“This pen? It was a purfreesh. I was buying wine glasses and a cookbook, and I was $11 away from free shipping, so …”

@negative12dollarbill I think you meant [pɜ(ɹ)ːfɹiːʃ]? “I” isn’t in the IPA, and though [ɪ] is, that would be indicated orthographically as “purfrish”
@thedansimonson
Fixed! Not in the graphic for technical reasons but in the text.
@negative12dollarbill I coined this term in Danish: Fri Fragt Fælden (alliteration of The free shipping trap)
@dittezach Nice! I'm not sure if I think of it as a trap exactly. Just something you wouldn't have bought normally. A little extra.
@negative12dollarbill haha for me it’s more the counter saying “xx dollars until you’ve achieved free shipping” that makes me think well in that case it’s a free thing…. almost… right?!! #GirlMaths 😆 https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGe1p1tKb/
