"After peer review, editors should have two options: reject or conditionally accept. A conditional acceptance means that the editor or their deputy commits to working with the author until the paper is published. There could never be a second round of anonymous reviews, which only encourage reviewers to dig in their hills, pick at nits, become combative, etc."

The case against Revise and Resubmit

Extensive revising is required by many journals in the social sciences. It is expected that authors “revise and resubmit” (R&R) their manuscripts several times before they are accepted for publ…

Impact of Social Sciences

@petersuber This is actually very close to the peer review process that we use! We still have Revise & Resubmit as a phase, but our stated goal (internally and externally) is to get the paper ready for publication. So, as long as our grad student authors are willing to keep working, we're willing to keep supporting them! Generally, our highly supportive method encourages authors during the R&R process, and we see acceptable pieces emerge after an average of three revision rounds (with an additional period of polishing that takes place between author and EIC).

While we definitely think that the blind revision process has merit, though, the whole way we go about it, and our stated intention of supporting our authors, makes ours a peer review experience fairly different from most. We'd love to see a more open, welcoming, and supportive peer review experience emerge in the research and academic world, and we hope we can be part of templating that. 😊
