Get ready!
@futurebird When I was courting @htdrake , I mailed her chocolate-covered wingnuts.
@futurebird will this be on the test?
@futurebird What makes the non-reversible, non-reversible?

@wmd @futurebird

The threading torwards the top is distorted, but the top is a bit "elastic", making it a tougher version of a nylon insert lock.

The same distortion prevents it from being (easily) insertable from the wrong end.

@wmd it's an all-metal locknut with a dented top edge that binds on the threads like a nylon insert one (so it would be difficult to start from that end.) I've only seen it called "all metal locknut" and the nylon one isn't reversible either.
@futurebird
@wmd @futurebird it's squashed a bit and the threads are distorted
@futurebird oh, this is a bit of a relief actually.

@futurebird the ones that are hard to find in home improvement centers are those designed for tracks. Like t-slot or mitter nuts (used in tools like circular saws, routers etc to screw hold down bolts. Or hammer nuts for fastening to extruded aluminum frames after the frame is built (can be used with tracks too)

@f_dion @futurebird ohh I didn't know you could specifically get nuts for the tracks in the table saw! I need these!

Every joke is an education on mastodon

@Altreus @futurebird depending on the clamps you use, a low profile head bolt can be used in a t track and with a wing nut or knob nut, makes for a greater range of adjustments.

@f_dion @futurebird "The one's that are hard to find"

My local hardware store doesn't even has Flange Nuts anymore. And that's a big chain store, inside a major city. Apparently they have beef with their supplier (some chinese company) and there aren't many others. Mind that I'm talking about a german chain, we don't have beef with China like the US does.

Only going to the store for raw materials by now, anything else is only available online. 😶‍🌫️

@futurebird
And again with the english Version

When I see graphics like this, I always think of this great panel 😁.
Unfortunately, the quality of the picture is not ideal and I have not yet been able to research the origin of this wonderful work of art.

@Sabberkatze @futurebird Was this supposed to be an English version of the chart? The post and alt text are in English, but not the chart.
@Twotired @futurebird Sorry, i didn't found a whole english Version of it, but I think the Idea of the chart is understandable. I'm no native speaker and my translation would be really shitty, so for the rest of the Translation please ask Google lens or a Translation Software.
@Sabberkatze @futurebird Fair enough! I just misunderstood your comment.
@Sabberkatze @futurebird
These are amazing. Some of them are the ones you wind up making by accident. Some of them I actually see a use for, like the hinged one that you could spin into place with your finger, then crank down with a wrench.
@Sabberkatze @futurebird Your great panel makes me think of this beautiful website! https://www.mcmaster.com/

@Sabberkatze @futurebird

Ah, I graded a few student projects that needed some of these fasteners.

(We will not talk about the industry projects that needed these fasteners)

@Sabberkatze @futurebird they're all hooked though. Right? Right?
@Sabberkatze @futurebird Wonderful! I've seen this before, but it makes me laugh again!
@Sabberkatze @futurebird DIN889 and DIN890 even have a vague trace of usefulness........
@Sabberkatze @futurebird
Love the fact that they took time to put DIN numbers there as well.
@Sabberkatze @futurebird
before Escher was forced out of engineering and into art, he made many important inventions, which still drive engineers nuts.
@llewelly @Sabberkatze @futurebird Lol. I need to read about Escher now.
@CMDoran @Sabberkatze @futurebird you should, but for pedantry, my remarks were not meant to be taken too seriously ... as far as I know, M.C. Escher the artist was never an engineer (but his father was), and he failed out of architecture.
@llewelly @Sabberkatze @futurebird Well of course he failed. His floors sloped and clients were forever lost in their homes😄.
@CMDoran @Sabberkatze @futurebird
I imagine his exit line was: "it's all downhill from here"

@llewelly

No judgement. But I love the #mastodonness of this self-outing.
"Sorry, that was a 'joke' and I know it is not precise and/or accurate, but ya, I think it is funny"

And so do I. 👏 👏

@futurebird wow... i learned a few things today... TY
@futurebird
Are you telling me I did it wrong ALL THE TIME??!?
@dickenhobelix
@futurebird
😂 thank you for this, now i'm ⚰️
@futurebird I already lost. 😔 I confused a hex with a heavy hex. Better luck next year.

@Sibshops

Don't give up. (though, that is a pretty obvious error, come on man) I'm certain if you construct some flash cards you won't screw up again. Don't bolt from a challenge over one little twist up! You can wrench victory back!

As we always say: Righty tighty, lefty loosie, friend!

@futurebird @Sibshops Unless you’re putting on bicycle pedals, then anything goes 😄

I like the Spanish version:
”La derecha oprime y la izquierda libera." The right oppresses and the left liberates. 😉

@MichaelPorter @futurebird @Sibshops wish I had known about the pedals a few years ago
@ehproque @futurebird @Sibshops Even knowing about them, I still manage to confuse myself when I go to change/fix one.
@MichaelPorter … and some gas fittings.
@johncarneyau *Every* time I went to use a regulator valve, I had to tell myself I was “going in” to get gas, not “loosening a lid”…
@MichaelPorter Finally a mnemonic I can get behind.

@MichaelPorter @futurebird @Sibshops or wheel nuts on old (very old) transit vans!

@futurebird @Sibshops

> Righty tighty, lefty loosie, friend!

Correct, but some things are tightened left-wise, currently I've no idea what it could be.

@futurebird @Sibshops und: nach fest kommt ab ☝️
@Sibshops @futurebird Are you studying witchcraft? 😜
What about these? :-)
@futurebird As a little kid, I'd help my dad sort nuts and bolts. Always loved the wing nut. Despite this vast experience😄 I had no idea there were so many names for these. Thanks for the nutty brain break; fun.
