The FSF should no longer exist.
"What happened" Nothing in particular, just a reaffirmation to how fucked up the organization is, that's all, and remembering I contributed money/time/effort to it when it was just an abuse factory. Even if I didn't know, those material contributions are complicit in that abuse, and I can never take it back. :/
@thephd ooof, sorry if it was my little rant earlier that got you thinking/remembering (in case you saw it). Maybe I should've CW'ed it : (
@astatide No, nothing like that. This was from my own recollection, not yours. Just pissed off in general and never said this clearly and directly and appropriately.
@thephd EDIT: Nevermind, this was… not necessary for me to say.
@thephd one must ponder what they actually do anymore
@ariadne After it was outed their primary legal counsel was an enormous abuser who fucked people over for decades, I wonder what they did at all other than dampen and sabotage an otherwise powerful and useful movement.
@ariadne @thephd sorry what, there's something worse happening with FSF!?
@Lunaphied @ariadne @thephd Actually yea, I thought this was RMS and/or Alexandre Oliva reference. But now I'm not sure.
Eben Moglen & SFLC — abusive employer & LGBTQIA+ unfriendly - Bradley M. Kuhn ( Brad ) ( bkuhn )

@ariadne @cr1901 @unlambda @thephd oh so it's the whole SFLC too fuck.
@thephd the FSF terminated Eben as counsel in 2017 after he claimed that Canonical could ship ZFS and it would not be a GPL violation. they have not *had* replacement counsel since that time, instead hiring lawyers as needed AFAIK.
@ariadne @thephd Note that they did not terminate for publicly screaming at people at LibrePlanet in violation of their CoC, just the legal conflicts of interest. https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/49370.html

@luis_in_brief @thephd i believe i said exactly this. the post i was replying to implied that Eben was still the counsel of the FSF, which is not the case.
@ariadne @thephd Yes! I meant to merely add that they had multiple reasons to fire him, but waited for “bad for the organization” when “bad to humans who make up the organization” was right there in front of them.

@luis_in_brief @thephd to be honest, he has been "bad for the organization" since basically the beginning. Conservancy, for example, under Eben's tutelage, used to pressure non-copyleft free software projects into adopting GPL. this was, needless to say, a bad look, and poor leadership.

since splitting up, bkuhn and karen have largely moved away from that strategy, instead welcoming non-copyleft free software projects into the fold.

@ariadne @thephd Meh? Pushing the GPL was defensible. I have mixed feelings about copyleft, and at this point very mixed feelings about the entire enterprise of software licensing as a tool at all, but in the grand scale of “people who were bad for the FSF” or “problematic strategy choices for the FSF” pretty much everyone other than RMS and his toxicity to community is such a distant second it is hardly worth mentioning.
@luis_in_brief @thephd i disagree. blaming all problems on RMS is cheap, as many of the positions RMS has taken over the years came from the advice of people in his "inner circle," including Eben.

@ariadne Had it been made more clear what I was dealing with beforehand, I would have gone literally anywhere else with my effort and time and not contributed it to the FSF, or gone under its wing.

It should have been disbanded years ago.

@thephd wait until you find out about what happened with DotGNU :)))))
@ariadne Here I go, searching again...
@thephd oh, the tl;dr is that stallman sabotaged DotGNU because it scared him, despite it being probably the most important project in GNU in the 2000s

Back in the day, prep.ai.mit.edu was pretty much a holy pilgrimage site like Simtel-20 or thumper.bellcore.com.

Minsky was right up there with Wiener and Corbató to me.

And like Musk and his old man I thought Technocracy was cool and good.

Well, not so much. Epstein corrupted CSAIL and Media Lab, and RMS said some monumentally stupid things defending/minimizing the accusations against Minsky, whom I liked very much.

No gods, no heroes, just us.

@ariadne @thephd

@hhardy01 @ariadne @thephd Absolute nonsense, RMS never defended Minsky or diminished anything, let alone gave any accolades to Creepstein.

Ariadne's tl;dr, is factually wrong to the point of not worth a point to discuss. So maybe keep to facts, instead of hearsay...

Should be noted that @hhardy01 is harassing me over in email, reported to admins .. doubt that they will do anything about it.
@thephd @ariadne I like Guix and Guile and I appreciate GCC, but even those projects could just move to something like the GNU Assembly or part ways and move on
@xerz @thephd i don't know if the assembly is still a thing. i would still be open to donating pkgconf to it, however.
@ariadne @thephd extort signatures to publish the signers' names on a mailing list ime

@thephd what did I miss?

Not disagreeing, mind.

@thephd @gsuberland what’s wrong with the FSF?
@thephd it is even worse: it's not, that they should not exist, but no one cares if they do it not.

So if RMS posits that Giuffre was not acting of her own free will, was under Epstein's coercive control, and Minsky allegedly had sex with her when she was legally underage in that jurisdiction, that is statutory rape and rape.

You know that before he got kicked out of CSAIL Richard used to have a sign on his door in the 32G Building which said to the effect of "no admittance, unless you are a cute girl."

I mean ewww? right?

Famed Computer Scientist Richard Stallman Described Epstein Victims As 'Entirely Willing'

Stallman, a pioneer of the free software movement, argued about the definition of "sexual assault" on an MIT email listserv about the university's connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
